What do you want to play in 2019 ?

I thought a good thread to motivate for pieces for the next year.

More of Philip Glass's etudes and all four Metamorphosis.

I'm a beginner on piano and working on Stella by Starlight and All The Things You Are as my first tunes to really dig deep into. I'll do some classical etudes and such for technique work, but musically it's not where my background or heart is.

Beethoven piano sonata #12 op 26 - the "Funeral March" sonata. Right now I am still in the 1st movement.
Bach Fantasy BWV 906 - only about halfway through at half speed - yikes!

That ought to keep me busy for a year...

I've actually been moving more towards improvisation and composition, after a couple of years working through some classical and jazz tunes, with the aim of taking a composition course in the summer - so my aim is to get someone else to play something I've written in front of an audience. If the audience claps that will be a bonus.

Interesting list. And I thought you were a more classically-minded pianist.

I was thinking the same thing. I did get to see both Beegie Adair and Fred Hersh in NY last year.

I'm hesitant to set myself a list of pieces to play, because I'm mostly trying to get my hands into good enough shape to practice regularly again (and more than 10 minutes at a time).

Therefore, my goals are:

- Be good to my hands (keep up osteoarthritis treatment and physio, heal muscle and nerve damage).
- Work up to 1 hr practice time a day without symptoms flaring up again.
- And THEN, work on some pieces I love. I'm not sure exactly which ones yet. On my list are the Mozart Adagio KV540 and the Chopin Waltz I posted about in the Pianist Corner a few weeks ago, op.64 no. 2, but I'm not married to when they've got to happen. I'd rather start with easier pieces I can play without hurting my hands, rather than practice stuff at or slightly above my level and then having to pause for weeks at a time

Try to get in as much practice as I can. There is an old grand that is kept tuned in the building next door in a the nursing school lounge. I work at a teaching hospital so I usually can some practice in the building next door most days as long is it's not being rented for an event.

I've been working on the voice / piano version of Sarah McLachlin's "Possession" ( https://youtu.be/8Z-cg5JOrOs ) for a quite a bit now, hoping finally to have it down decent enough to share within the next few weeks ...

I’m empty, no goals for a change. I would like to just keep playing and improving. Maybe some etudes or some technical work, some more Chopin, finally get to the cadences, some more sight reading.....these are just generalizations, I just want to keep playing!

My goals regarding improvisation do exist but they are numerous, hard to describe in a few words and are, like improvisation itself, to a large extent unstable. By this time next year I hope to have recorded at least a further two hundred hours of music. I hope I shall have resolved one or two annoying issues with technique by then too, but physical changes are slow to take effect at the best of times. Pieces ? There are a number of pieces I have always wanted to play but have never been capable; now I am clearly capable I have lost all musical interest in playing them. I haven’t quite worked out why that has happened. “Oh dear, how sad, never mind !”

Rachmaninoff's Prelude Op. 23, No. 4 in D major is my primary goal for the coming year.

Also more Bach sinfonias (I can't play Bach well yet but it's good for me to keep at it), Brahms solo pieces, and Chopin preludes and nocturnes. And Debussy preludes. Maybe some Schubert and Schumann. Scriabin, too, is on the list. Granados, Albeniz, Mompou. Oh, and Beethoven. (I see I'm getting into 2020 now!)

Many, many pieces. The two highlights, the two towards which I hope I can have progressed towards the end of 2019, are the following two.

1. Grieg - Watchman's Song (Op. 12, No 3)



2. Bartók - An Evening in the Village

#5 Etude is magic, if you have not done it.

IIRC, at least one of those metamorphoses has some driving arpeggios, so be careful. I totally hurt myself a long time back on Wichita Sutra Vortex.

The only goal I have set so far is I'd like to try playing one of the Grieg Lyric Pieces which is Henle level 4. With my teachers blessing it will be Arietta Op 12 #1.

I'd like to have the Bach Prelude in C minor ready for the Bach recital in March. I'm already working on it, so not sure if that counts.

Other than that, I'm going to play whatever my teacher thinks I should work on
