From what I've read, it looks like it'll be a nice DP. I actually have an acoustic as well, but I figure it can't hurt to have a digital around. I had a few Yamahas in the past, and I miss all the sounds and possibilities that just aren't possible with an acoustic. Looks like the keys and action are pretty nice, and it's the closest I'll probably ever come to having a Bosendorfer Imperial Grand, lol. There are a few reviews on Amazon, but pretty scarce around the interwebs. I'm guessing that's because it just came out. Of course, none of the local stores have them on hand.

Anyway, if you have any question, just ask. There are a few P515 owners in this forum. My summary would be that it is a good instrument, with the logical limitations a digital piano, and one of its class, have.

Great. I may think of some things once I get. It will just be a supplemental piano for me, but just wanted to make sure it performed reasonably well. I've been out of the digital game for a while, but would like to play around with one again. I like to play a lot of movie music, so hopefully the strings and orchestral sounds are decent.

I purchased one and liked everything about it ….. except the sound. I took it back.

I have one and think it's a great package. Got the pedals and stand too for £1439 in the UK. There's a Bosendorfer sample in there but I don't use it...the CFX does everything i need it to. I don't even use the variations (Warm Grand, Studio etc...) I just play the CFX in the way that suits whatever musical need.

The speakers are just 'adequate' but they make a nice change from headphones and do the job. The action is great, but actually a touch lighter I would say than the CP4 which I owned previously. I'm currently doing exercises (Tankard and Harrison/Hanon/scales) and find my wrists don't get as fatigued as easily as on the CP4, from which I'm inferring that action is lighter.

The rhythms/drums are nice and there's loads of Ipad connectivity with Yamaha's latest app, which I haven't explored yet.

Overall, it's a great deal for the money.

The topic of orchestral sounds would be a controversial one, I guess.

Thanks for the summary! Sounds like it'll do the trick for me. I'm OK with a light action. I recently had to have some work done on my Kawai grand because the action was too heavy.

I have the p515, and I also have the two generations prior the p155.

This p515 is the best p series ( portable) piano Yamaha has made.
The cfx sample is all I use and I set it to bright, with sound boost to 1, it truly is an awesome experience. The speakers in my opinion are are more than enough for home.

The action(nwx) is also more realistic and controllable than previous p series that had the graded hammer action. The nwx is essentially. Same action as cp4 except with escapement.

The only other competitors are Kawai ES8 and Roland fp 90.
But I think sound of Yamaha is best sounding , and only other close one , is es8, and fp 90 being distant third. The Yamaha and Roland are far more reliable though than es8 of kawai, which is known to have problems with the keyboard. So even though I happen to like best, the p515 , the Durability being first priority I would still choose it to es8, even if I liked es8 better

I think the P515 is a superb choice because ...
If you want a good keyboard action, you've got it ... without spending a fortune on furniture.

And if you want better sound from a virtual instrument you won't feel bad about bypassing its internal sound generator because you haven't spent much money on it.

Contrast that with the dilemma many face with pianos in the $3000, $4000, $5000 range. The sound isn't much better and they (and I) have resorted to using virtual instruments to get good sound.

Moreover, if you like the action of the P515 it may be a better, lower-cost alternative to the Kawai VPC keyboard.

I think its a nice instrument, but I dont like the sound via speakers (too weak for me). But since many people play via headphones, that may be neglectible for you?

Markuska, one thing you may want to try is experiment with the sound boost options ( there is 3 options).

I was feeling the sound was not a Fast attack and cut through but the sound boost options did work for me and did the trick . In the manual , that is what is described about sound boost and it works quite well imho

Thanks. I was wondering about this. I'm sure I'll have to do some reading, but how does the virtual thing work? Would I run the software on a laptop connected to the P515, and the sound plays through the Yamaha's speakers?

From what I read, that's an option with the 515, vs. connecting the laptop to an audio system.

- Purchase VST software that emulates piano sounds like Pianoteq or VI Labs Ravenscroft 275
- Download and install the VST software on your Windows/Mac laptop/PC
- Turn on your P-515 and disable local tone generator (Local control OFF...see the P-515 manual).
- Download and install the P-515's USB audio interface drivers from the Yamaha website. Yes the P-515 has a built-in audio interface / sound card!
- Connect your P-515 to your laptop via USB (which carries MIDI IN data from P-515 to VST software AND audio data from VST back to the P-515). Configure the VST software to read MIDI IN data coming from the P-515 and to send audio data to the P-515 which then plays through your speakers!

Hope you find this helpful!

Thanks. Doesn't sound too hard. I might give this a try eventually.

So do we need the app to access the 480 XG voices? Kind of silly, if you ask me. If I'm running the app on an iphone, do I need a cable to physically connect it to the board?
