They could only match the online price of the CA98R with no discounts possible. There's no competition and no way to buy a CA98 at a better price in my area that I'm aware of.

Discounts are always possible.
But dealers don't give discounts.
Only the buyer can make the discount.

The best leverage I have is to go with Yamaha instead of Kawai. With Yamaha the best deals are via Costco, but the dealers themselves don't budge... so I'm not sure what you mean.

Ha! Good point. When I was leaning towards a Clavinova I was definitely looking into a Yamaha sale via Costco. Back to my prior point about American’s not loving to haggle, Costco does offer a similar buying service for cars that helps to remove the bulk of haggling. You find out which local car dealerships have an agreement with Costco, Costco gives you a quoted price for the make and mode of car you are interested in, and you simply go to that dealer and tell them that you want the Costco quoted price. It makes the whole experience much more comfortable and you don’t feel as much like you are potentially getting screwed on the price.

Maybe the best way to get the price you want is to simply go into your local piano shop and quote a couple prices that you are seeing on this thread, or by mentioning the “65% of MSRP” rule of thumb. It’s easy enough to find the MSRP for any model by googling it.

Does anyone know of a list of the factory-owned Kawai dealers, like the one in Dallas, TX? My cursory use of the location tool on the Kawai page doesn’t make it seem like this would be an easy list to put together (although, it might prove very useful for buyers in the US!). Especially those that feel they are at the monopolistic mercy of a local dealer.

I know this is 47 pages deep into a random Internet forum, but Kawai, Yamaha, Roland or even any acoustic piano brand has to account for both “informed buyers” (who know what ballpark the discounts should be in) versus “walk in off the street” buyers (who are more at the mercy of negotiations).

I don’t want to paint local dealers as ‘evil,’ but we live in an age of, and are accustomed to, the global internet superstore, open 24/7 and at the mercy of price competition. Maybe local mom-and-pop shops need to re-focus on selling used pianos, offering teaching, repair and tuning services, etc, if they can’t compete with informed buyers. This should go doubly so for digital pianos (excluding perhaps pre-assembled DP models), which can be readily shipped and show up at your door in a box the same way as IKEA furniture can be ordered online. Go make the deal directly through the corporate-owned store (or a local dealer) willing to respect your “prices paid” knowledge.

When you say dealers won't budge ... what exactly did you do to try to make them budge?

I don't even try to make them "budge". I make an offer. They can say yes or they can say no.

They say yes, I say yes. Sale made.

They say no, I say no. See 'ya. Have a nice day.

FYI, you'll not likely get a response here. This is mostly a "put" thread.
Buyers post. Readers tend to look mostly at prices, methinks.

For a response ... send a PM to "changer".
