I think I would give it a miss unless I needed a very small piano.

That seems to be a short compass spinet. I would pass. There was a variety of ~60 note uprights that were made in the standard configuration. Having the scales chopped off at either end essentially makes these small uprights a cut-out of a larger piano. Without the need to fit in a full bass section, the lowest note can be much longer than any spinet. They are a favorite of gigging musicians and buskers as they can be managed by two easily and fit in a minivan. They are often called Tom Thumb or Shirley Temple pianos. The best one I know of was made by Jesse French and was called The Wee Gem.

I know I'm in the minority, but I've started to really like these mini pianos, with all their limitations. In fact I have one myself and use it on gigs. (ie: jazz cocktail with an upright bass). I can get it in and out of my van by myself. I also have a good quality digital piano (Yamaha P255) but I have no fun playing on that.

They come under the names Cameo, Melodigrand, and others depending on the location. As far as I know, nobody makes them anymore. Just don't pay too much for one, they can sometimes be had for free or very cheap.

Looks identical to a Melodigrand that sits beside me as I type.I have 2,both have excellent tone.I paid 100 bux for one,120 for the other.I'd probably jump on it if a good price, but that's just me.

If anyone has one in the LA area, let me know I might just get it.

I've never seen or heard one. Providing you like the sound of them, then why not? If you are always judging things against the sound of a grand piano then you are probably going to be very disappointed. But why would you do that. A harpsichord or a forte piano doesn't sound like a grand piano either but both those instruments have folk who love them. It's all in the ear of the beholder.

Thanks for replies.
Getting acoustic piano for finger strength is the main goal.
Full size ones are very heavy and need movers even for spinet.
This looks small enough to manage with my friend.

So if it's below $100, get it?

I know of one (Cameo brand) in a cottage that is unheated and closed up for the Canadian winter. It was brought there balanced across two canoes, before there was a road access. It has held up for 60 years needing little more than tuning. They're lots of fun for what they are, although they certainly won't substitute for a full range acoustic piano. But yes for gigs or just the novelty aspect, I'd almost like to have one just for that reason.

It looks really sweet. Might be interesting, especially if it's a great price.

It's that cage to its left that worries me... It's either for a very tall dog, or... eeeeeeeeek!

No, that's a toy piano. Look at the scale of it against the pattern of the wall paneling. If the piano is 44 inches tall, then the stripe to the right is at least 12 inches wide.
Both Kawai and Schoenhut make, or made, a 60-key toy piano.

I am reminded that toy pianos don't have strings, and that the Kawai 64-key Princess was a Melodigrand knock-off. All I can say is, get the dimensions from the seller.

My thoughts,

These pianos, specifically the Melodigrand mini spinets (which is what I think is pictured), were manufactured to be inexpensive when new, and to fit where an acoustic piano could not fit. They were sometimes called apartment spinets and were only built as novelties. I have seen a few over the decades, but if digital pianos existed as they are today, these mini-spinets would never have been made. In comparison to a larger acoustic piano, the feel and tone are not good.

Anyway, I found a video of one that pretty much matches what I have heard in the past - https://youtu.be/TwEBVurbPFg

On the other hand, they can sound pretty good compared to 88 key pianos of the same height, because they do not have the notes at the end of the range which are the most compromised.
