Does anyone know if the satin finished on a new NY Steinway is still lacquer, or have they switched to polyester as Mason and Hamlin has done?

It is the same lacquer they used before they added poly.

I was told my around 10 year old satin ebony BB has a black poly coat with a clear lacquer on top of the poly. Can anyone verify that Masons of that vintage were finished like that? The net effect is very nice IMO but somewhere between a semi-gloss and a satin finish to my eyes.

Dear Ms. Phillips,

Do you know whether all new New York productions are in glossy finish now? Our local dealer no longer has any satin/matte finish models on the showroom floor since last year. When I asked the manager, she said all the models they got were glossy finish. Piano Buyer website now lists satin and polished ebony together; it used to be separate entries.

That seems correct to me Pianoloverus. That technique was started to be used by us about 20 years ago on ebony satin rebuilds. It was useful because the poly. base coat lays evenly and prepares for the lacquer topcoat quicker than a totally lacquer finish.

These days we have gone back to using entirely lacquer finishes.

Yes, there would have been a thin laminate of sorts over the case, and case parts in lieu of veneer. This forms a stable, quick and easy to finish base. Then some coats of polyester. After that is sanded flat, it is finished with several coats of lacquer, which once cured, would be sanded and rubbed to its final sheen.

If you search the archives, there may be some photos of the 2008 factory tour, though I'm not sure how many specifically describe the finish process.

Since Steinway has gotten into polyester so much in recent years, I wouldn't be surprised if they use essentially the same process on their ebony pianos. IOW, still use lacquer on the final coats, since that rubs out so much quicker and nicer, but use polyester over a laminate to be more efficient in that area. It's what most manufactures have been doing for a while now.

They have satin. You just have to order it. I have satin on my floor because it is still popular here.

By "thin laminate of sorts" do you just mean the outermost layer of wood?

Thank you for answering my question. I guess in our area, the dealer has to satisfy potential local customers' preference (I personally prefer satin finish).

Yes, exactly. The structural laminations would still be maple.
Here's the link to the 2008 thread: http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/922050/3.html

When PW took the Steinway tour that same year, the rims on their 9' pianos (virtually all designated to be 'ebonized') were mahogany, while the veneer on the lids were mostly maple. This is consistent to their (and others) process in the past as well--just use up the 'non-furniture grade' material, or perhaps they had bought it at a bargain... Still using mahogany veneer on the rims was a bit puzzling to me, since the process to get a flat surface on that is much more time consuming than on birch or maple. I'd be pretty interested in knowing what they do today.

Mahogany is more stable than birch or maple.
