Hello,

I've acquired and old Bechstein model V that I am currently reconditioning for resale. I bought it mainly because of the interesting cabinet. I have spent hours trying to find information on this cabinet but have had no luck.

Does anyone have any knowledge about it? I've never seen one like it.

So far I have reshaped the hammers, removed all the felt from the keys, broken two strings and done the superglue trick to the pins. Needs another application but it has helped a lot already. And given it a good clean.

I play a lovely Brinsmead at home and have given that a mild spruce up. Made me want to work on more pianos!

There should be a picture attached - we'll see.

Cheers,
George

I can tell you a little bit about this:

The cabinet isn't one that was offered by Bechstein, but has been "modernised". At one time, new pianos were so expensive that shops couldn't afford to buy them in and so a lot of old pianos were modernised for sale which included rounding off the corners, and changing the pilasters on the front legs. Sometimes the'd reverse the front panel, or remove the beading, or make a new one. Actually I think it's a shame they did this, I prefer the traditional look myself, but you know, it was the style of the time.

I think the rounded corners look very nice.

Does anyone know the date of manufacture of this piano? I have seen old Bechstein uprights, but never in such a design. I agree it is attractive though .
It reminds me of an old Petrof which appeared once on this site .

That was intersting, I was not aware. Shops still struggles though to balance the cost of acquiring expensive pianos, paying rent in a metropolitan area, and selling them out fast enough with an acceptable profit.

Sauter still produces piano with rounded corners, in one of their Peter Maly designs; the Rondo.

Thanks for info guys. At first I thought it looked a bit odd but I'm very fond of it now. It's 60832 so I make this a 1901 model V. The person I bought it off had had it for around 50-60 years so it would have had the change before that. It's had a lot of work inside too with mismatching strings etc but it's getting there. The CA glue trick worked a treat!

I'd never played a straight strung piano before but this really sings. Looking forward to finishing it off. Spent all weekend gluing in key bushings.

Cheers,
George

In 1901 Bechstein's biggest selling piano was the Model V, which was a grand. It's interesting to see an upright with the same name.
