I've recently joined this forum in search of knowledge as an inexperienced piano buyer with a very talented child. I really hope you can help me make an informed decision. I'm upgrading from my daughter's spinet. I want to buy the best piano that I can afford for my daughter. She works hard practicing and she deserves a great insturement.

I found a 2005 Kawai GM-10k that appears to be in good condition. However, I can't seem to match the serial number anywhere online: F021186. Is anyone able to verify that this is a valid serial number for a 2004 or 2005 GM-10k? It appears to me that it is missing a 0 after the F. Please let me know your thoughts regarding the serial number validity. I have looked up several serial number searches online and can't find it.

The asking price for the GM-10k is $6,000 and it appears to be in decent overall condition. The price is negotiable, he seems eager to sell it (moving). I am also considering purchasing a 2005 K25 upright that is priced at $4000. This upright piano is absolutely flawless. I think that my child prefers the feeling of playing on the baby grand, but the GM-10k condition isn't as pristine and they are asking for more $. Which of these two piano's would you choose and why? It the baby grand a no brainier if the serial #checks out and we have room for it? Both pianos were purchased new according to the sellers, so not gray market.

It seems like I could easily find used baby grand Samik, Sojin, Knabe for less $. However, the popular opinion seem to be to say away from those brands. I've narrowed the search down to these 2 Kawai pianos. The serial number issue with the GM-10k has me concerned and this is probably the main reason I have not made an offer on it. I also like the idea of paying a little less for the K25 that looks new.

Thanks for any constructive info you may provide!

This is the second recent enquiry about a Kawai with a missing 0. I wonder if it's the same piano, or if Kawai's serial numbers are not consistent. If you have a tech check it over and give his/her approval, I wouldn't be too concerned about the serial number.

Thanks. Do you think the GM-10k should be capable of producing better sound than the 48" upright k25?

here's an earlier discussion about the small grand you're considering. if you want a piano your child can stick with for some years without going through another 'trade up' process, my suggestion would be to take your time. petite grands can vary quite a bit, so if you're leaning that way be sure to try a number of them. you also might look at taller uprights - - there are more than a few that will equal or surpass entry level petite grands. buona fortuna with your quest.

There is a listing of Kawai serial numbers on Kawai America's web site. It shows approximate starting serial numbers for each year of Kawai's production:

http://www.kawaius-tsd.com/pages/serial_manudate.html

F021186 corresponds to production in Kawai's Indonesia factory during 2007

I'm surprised how few people think to click on "Support" from our web site when looking for older piano information.

The Kawai website has a lot of good information, particularly for their pianos, and some of it is useful for others.
