Piano Buying - Size Question #2783727

Hello,

I am starting to research acoustic pianos because I have taken a huge liking to this instrument.

I have been looking at affordable pianos around me (I am wary of used grands from someone's basement) and have found that grands within my price range (up to $20k CAD ($15k USD)) are all either around the 5ft mark or are a bit longer, but the quality is quite low.

From all that I have read, 6ft is the shortest one should buy a grand if they are looking to take the craft to a professional level. Also, I have read that one would be better off purchasing a quality upright over a 5-ft grand for deeper lower notes and better overtones. Would these statements be, generally, true?

I would prefer to not finance, but I would like to buy just one really good one and have it for life. My digital is serving me well, but I can only advance so far with it. Even RCM only allows testing up to gr6 on a digital, I believe.

Thank-you,
Q

I agree, with some grands you can go around the 5'5'' mark but in general around 6 feet is where they start to get a nice base.

For 15K USD you should be able to buy a really nice piano, you will have to look harder.

Go play as many as you can, find one you like and make an offer you can afford.

When you get tired of looking around, take a break. It is a large purchase buying, remorse is the last thing you want.

Where are you located?

Good luck, this should be a fun experience up to you to make it one.

You Will get much more assistance if you post your question in the general Piano section, not the FAQ section. That being said, I would urge you not to rule out a preowned grand piano, as they do not need to be necessarily something from somebody’s basement. You just need to have a independent, good tech inspection for any preowned piano prior to purchase.

FYI I bought a quite lovely M & H BB that way at a fraction of the new cost.

That budget is plenty, I'd go with a used 6'6"+ instrument. Pianos are like cars, they're very illiquid so they lose a huge chunk of value quickly. Set aside 2k for regulation and voicing, it really helps.
