Out of curiosity- anyone tried Roland headphones with their pianos or on another digital piano? I wonder if I should consider them. They have very good reviews as far as I can tell.

No. Which model are you considering? Roland sells headphones from ca. 25 EUR (RH-5) to 200 EUR (RH-300). Probably some will be a good value for money. You have plenty of headphones reviews used with DPs on this forum, but, as far as I remember, Roland is not a common headphone brand amongst the users on this forum.

Aren't the RH-300s rebadged Sonys? Or did I imagine that? I somehow doubt Roland would have bespoke 'phones.

Yeah I figured. I was looking at RH-300 for example. I kind of hoped that Roland would offer more than for example Senheiser which is most popular.

It is tempting to imagine that 'phones apparently made or marketed by digital piano manufacturers would somehow be calibrated for use with their pianos. But remember that Roland also makes mastering and recording equipment and other electronic instruments so their 'phones would still need to be compatible with a wide range of sources. Just like Sennheiser in fact. Expecting more (or even the same) from Roland than Senns of a comparable price is probably unrealistic.

I meant because Roland headphones are not as popular, on market popular=overpriced in many cases at least.
Anyway I'm insterested in opinions of people that tested those with digital piano.

A quick comment on "value for the money".... I love a good deal, but when it comes to quality sound and emotional connection, the memory of value quickly deteriorates.

As far as I know RH-300 are not recommended for DPs, RH-A7 are (about $130). RH-300 are recommended for mixing and mastering.

I remember that I was playing a DP in Roland headphones for DPs once, but I don't remember the model exactly, it was many years ago. I remember that I thought that they were definitely calibrated for DPs, the DP sound was really nice and balanced in them, but I thought they probably won't be so good for general music listening.

And I think Roland headphones for DPs will suit any DP. It seems to be too difficult to calibrate headphones just for Roland DP sound.

I had a Roland RH a7 that I used on my HP507.
Great headphones, good sound, good quality even if it is plastic made, solid cable, very confortable.
Not as detailed as the AKG702 that I use now but easier to drive, it needs less power to sound good.
Honestly I liked it a lot, but it is a little expensive for what it is in comparison with other specialized brands.

A question for the OP:

. . . Why do you think that a headphone stamped "Roland", of a given quality,
. . . would be cheaper than a headphone stamped "Sennheiser" of the same quality?

That's especially relevant, if the two headphones come out of the same Chinese factory.

I suspect that "headphone specs" are even less meaningful (for most headphones) than loudspeaker specs. IMHO, you listen to some within your budget, and buy the one you like the best. Or (in my case) you see a sound man at a concert wearing Senn HD280, and ask:

. . . "Are those any good?"

. . . "Oh, they're good, and very common. They're not highest-quality. But remember -- they're also moderately priced, and if you run a studio and need a dozen pairs, price becomes important. So lots of people use them."

So I bought a pair. I've had them for maybe ten years -- they're like an old pair of shoes.

Funny, every time I need to buy a pair of headphones, about one per ten years since 1985, and then only because I accidentally run over the cord with the vacuum and can’t be bothered repairing it, I use a test disc and audition the headphones.

I run a flat frequency sweep from 20 Hz to 20kHz and listen for bumps in the frequency response that I can clearly hear, and, more importantly, I listen for buzzes and distortions in the sound. I do this several times for each pair I try, choose the one I like, and insist on that particular pair, not a boxed pair from the back of the store. If they insist I take a boxed pair, I audition it before I buy it. I don’t worry about price. Sound (and comfort obviously) is all that is important. The result has often been moderately priced heaphones (~180USD in today’s prices).
