So I am immersed in the Used Market here in the E. Bay and I scoped out a 2012 Cable Nelson..CN-7 and was struck by its boggy, lazy action, with many action irregularities-as well as poor decay in the uppermost treble range. This is billed as a Yamaha offshoot, but it's no match, obviously for the U series of uprights. But to shift lanes, I wanted to inquire a bit about the older Acrosonics and embed this video only because this former student, acquired what I consider is a very strikingly resonant piano with very good regulation from note to note. This is an example of its sound. First is it a console, second, does it have the indirect blow action. I have heard the I.B. action is hard to repair..

My query is, Is this model in the video a "console" Acro, and did Acro consoles have the indirect blow action as did the spinets. I believe the piano in this footage was made in the1960s.. And I know the spinets have the wider sound chamber and all the innovations, but can I and should I consider for my student, one of the indirect blow Acros, naturally one of the older Acros? I have played the 90's ones and they are NOT the emblematic Acros that are vintage or those marched into the '60s. The company was bought out I suspect. Or the NAME was bought out.

Baldwin had 2 different Acrosonics in the past, a spinet version and a console version that they still sell today. The spinet version (like all the others I believe) is not 'full blow' action. The consoles are 'full blow'. You can tell the difference by the height of the piano. I look at the height of the music stand - a spinet will be several inches below the top of the stand while a console case height will be about the same height of the stand. The one in your video looks like a console.

I am a beginner less than 6 months in and tried out a lot of pianos (this was after 1 month - my teacher has a grand). I think beginner pianos in this price range can vary a lot for most brands just based on how they were cared for or not. In my experience, the Yamaha M400/500 series stood out as pretty uniform from piano to piano (I played about 6 different ones). I did run across one CN and it did not stand out to me. I tried 3 different Baldwin consoles and one of them stood out with a nice even touch and rich tone - so that's what I got. It is not an acrosonic, but a 'classic' (they have 3 models) - still the same guts. I think it is a great beginner piano.

Thanks for your reply, Progman. Yes, I do favor some of the Baldwin Hamilton 44" uprights of the 1980's. One of my students happened to luck out and get one for FREE..I think the Acro Consoles of 60's are few and far between.Haven't stumbled on one in the last bunch of years except for the student's piano.
