Why the two styles? Can you put B hammers on a grand that has C type originally? Why the difference, what need is fulfilled with each type?

Do you mean for Steinways? Steinway A/B hammers have different felt from C/D hammers.

Hi BDB,
it's about the form of the molding. At least Abel calls them type A, B and C. Its how the unprocessed tail looks like.
