Re the difference between the Jansen vinyl and leather benches, I strongly recommend going for the leather if the price difference is at all doable.

Not long ago, I came across nearly new second-hand vinyl Jansen bench on sale at a dealer's; it would have been in mint condition, but the owner's dog had mauled the corner. When I handled the torn edges, the vinyl felt surprisingly soft and thin, not at all equivalent to leather. (I sew and have handled much heavier vinyls, which I what I'd expected to feel after reading so often that the vinyl is very high quality.) I believe that the exceptional padding Jansen uses makes the vinyl feel and appear very firm and smooth when new -- but I don't believe it could possibly hold up as well as leather over the years and decades.

Got my own new Jansen bench not long after. In leather, of course. smile

And you get top-quality upholstery, as well.

If "no staples" was the case in 2011, it is no longer the case today. Just recieved a Jensen yesterday, factor direct, and it definitely has staples. Not a bad bench but seems there are many more alternatives than just a few years ago. Plenty of $200-300 artist benches on Amazon with great reviews.

David, I bought 2 Jansen artist benches this past year from http://www.jansenpianobenches.com/artistbenches.html

I had no problems with either delivery. I did buy the Duet Artist Benches about $970 each. I bought the vinyl, I just personally like the vinyl better. It is high quality vinyl and I think looks like leather. My understanding is vinyl is softer, I am very pleased with my purchase. I am in my 5th year of lessons. I practice a 2-3 hours a day. I bought the one to go with my YUS 5, and I liked it so much I bought one for the Clavinova CLP 575. Actually I contemplated spending that on another bench and my husband said you sit on it every day and should have it for the next 20 years. When I viewed it that way, I use it every day. I sit on that bench more than using my car. The bench is very comfortable. I have had them for about a year. I have not noticed any squeaking or issues with the mechanisms of raising or lowering the bench. However, I am the only one who plays so the benches do not get adjusted.

I contemplated on the single versus duet, I just like the bigger bench, I fall within a normal weight for my height and when I measured out the single bench it seemed small to me and I weight 145. So for a man the single bench may seem small. The weight of the bench is not really an issue because I am not carrying it or moving in anywhere. I have wood floors and coasters on the bottom of the legs so it slides easily to move it to sit on it.

I am very pleased with my purchase. I bought a new YUS 5 in 2015 and it came with with a fairly cheap bench (under $100) considering the price of the piano. I don't know why I waited so long to buy this bench, it makes a difference.

Hope this review was helpful.

My piano came with a Jansen bench and I agree, it is very nice. I'm thinking of getting the duet bench because my daughter likes to sit and play with me on occasion. I wish I could see the leather before I make up my mind, I have the vinyl and although it is nice, I'm curious to see what the leather looks and feels like. Anyway, it's a lifetime purchase, meaning it will last for the rest of my life so I have no problem getting the best.

While Jansen benches are comfortable, I've found them to develop noise and creak after a few years, and they are such a pain to adjust.

Ever since going to Hidrau and Andexinger hydro-pneumatic benches, there is no going back.

The pneumatic benches may be convenient but I find them to be ugly. They look like a bench you’d find in weight lifting gym.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but I don't look at the bench while I play piano.

I've got a Jansen duet bench, but after years of use, it's became boring, so I replaced with this customized velvet duet bench, just comfortable for both body and eyes cool

Lol. I never thought of that! I'll never look at my bench the same way again.

Sorry, I wasn't intending to insult anyone's bench. I do recognize how functionally good the bench is, just aesthetically it's not my cut of tea. If they could make one that looked a little more traditional...

No, you're right! My bench looks like something I should be lying down on with a weight in each hand! Luckily the rest of the room is such a mess it doesn't really matter. grin

Another ringing endorsement of the Jansen benches is to be found at any orchestra rehearsal. The pianist shows up to find that the Jansen bench has been stolen by a harpist or cellist.
