One of my piano students is looking to buy a used upright piano. I went to look at a used Kawai K-25, that was purchased in 2004 for $7000 (CDN). The seller is asking $4000. I checked out the piano, and found everything worked well and sounded good with the exception that it was bit out of tune, especially in the higher registers (the piano was tuned yearly up until two years ago). The hammers also looked in decent condition, with just the ones around the middle of the piano showing some grooves.

I'm thinking the price may be a bit high yet? Is it still worth it to get a technician to come in to take a look at it?

The other pianos we looked at were Baldwin Hamiltons, 1973 and 1981, listed for $4000 by a dealer. My impression was that the Kawai was a better option.

A Kawai 2004 K-25 in good condition would be a much better bet than the two older Hamiltons you looked at.

Yes - you should definitely have it checked out by a piano tech.

The original purchase price of $7K (CDN) in 2004 seems high - unless pianos tend to cost more new in Canada than they do in the USA.

The current asking price of $4K (CDN) equals about $5,200 in US dollars. Given that the Kawai is 14 years old, that might be a tad high from a private seller. $3,500 CDN might be more realistic.....but wait until you receive the tech's assessment.

Carey - thanks for the reply. Prices of most things in Canada typically are higher than US prices, even accounting for exchange rates. Hopefully my student was able to get the Kawai - the listing was gone soon after we looked at it. Otherwise I might have to do some more shopping.

When I was shopping three years ago, you could buy a new K300 for CDN $7K, or a new K200 for $4500, so I hope no one actually paid that much for a K25 in 2004. Perhaps having four Kawai dealers within an hour's drive keeps the prices here lower than elsewhere...

According to Google, 1 CDN = 0.77 USD. Is there some other concern that you arrived a $5200 in USD figure?

Good catch.

Bad math - old brain - humble apologies.

$4K (CDN) should be $3,080 in USD. Thus the price is (was) right.
