We are considering getting an acoustic upright. But I use my laptop a lot with Garritan CFX with my Kawai CA17 as midi controller. When we would get an acoustic my choices would be either a Kawai K300 ATX3 or Aures or a Brodmann PE 121 with Pianodisc Quiet time.

My question is: would an acoustic upright with ATX3 or Pianodisc be as good as a digital piano like my CA17 to use as a midicontroller? Considering it's an upright action and doesn't have te double escapement and fast repetition.
I'd rather not keep my CA17 as a separate midi controller. We dont have the place for 2 piano's in the livingroom so I would realy like to have it all in one.

Anyone experience with a hybrid upright and VST software?

Thanks for your thoughts!
Tim

I am not sure if the new ATX 3 system is different than the older ATX regarding the physical changes it introduces to the action when the system is enabled. So, you may find that the RM3 action of your CA17 reacts faster and has a deeper key travel than the acoustic in silent mode. So, it might be harder to have the same level of control with the ATX system than with a quality DP action.

However, it does not make any sense to invest in an entry-level acoustic upright to be mainly used as a VST controller in silent mode. If you are not planning to use the acoustic as an acoustic piano then you should look into something else, like a Kawai NV10 or Yamaha N1 or N2 (or wait for a potential N1X/2X upgrade). This way you get an action adapted from a grand piano that can work as an excellent VST controller.

I've recently tried the K300 with the ATX3. The action felt great and responsive. Precise, easy to control and to play. Way better than any digital I've played. I think I even prefer it to the avangrands, but I'd have to try them side by side to make that statement. So, at least in my opinion, the CA17 can't possibly compete with it. And it was a lot better than the NU1X as well, at least that was my preference.

The piano would be used most of the time as an acoustic piano though. But I would still need to be able to control my Garritan CFX.
