I'm sorry to labour the point but I' m getting on in years and struggle to get my head around some in fact most of the digital
/electronic technology, and I cannot get a satisfactory answer from the South African Roland importers so am very reliant on this forum for answers. I sourced a cable that will connect my piano to my iPad but when I switch on it says cannot connect to piano. Sorry this is to use the oiano partner 2 app. In reply to my original post Halberta said that he had used a laptop and it worked so I tried this but You have to use Google play and the only downloads are for Apple and Android and my computer uses Microsoft and so again they are not compatable. The distributors are for whatever reason not willing to put me in touch with Roland and I cannot find anything on their website to contact them with a view to getting a solution to this so is there anyone on the forum who can help with either a solution or a Roland forum where they maybe able to help.

Hello Jack,

I'm afraid I cannot help you with the details, however I seem to recall that Halberta used an Android emulator (or a version of Android which could run with Windows) and installed the Piano Partner 2 app via Google Play that way.

Again, I've never tried this myself, but found it quite an innovative trick to access the app without a tablet.

Perhaps Halberta will provide more details?

To be honest, I'd also investigate why the app is not functioning with your iPad.

Best of luck!

Cheers,
James

Hi Jack - I used to own an FP30 and was able to connect it to an iPad Air running on iOS version 11.4 without issues.

The process was convoluted but after an update (can't remember if it was an iOS update or the Piano Partner 2 app), it became a lot more simple. This process still works now for my Roland HP605 so should not be an issue.

Aplogies if you tried this already but what I found and worked for me is to ensure that the FP30 is running the latest firmware (currently ver.1.05) and can be downloaded here:

https://www.roland.com/global/support/by_product/fp-30/updates_drivers/ and the instructions are on their website on how to perform this firmware upgrade.

Then on the iPad (under Settings, Bluetooth, Devices) remove any reference of the FP30 (if any) using the i button next to said reference and select forget.

Then launch, Partner 2 app, select the Settings icon (top right hand corner), press Bluetooth Midi Device and the FP30 should appear in there in a NotConnected status - select it and the app will connect to it.

I never had to use the camera USB dongle because BT worked and was easier than messing around with the cable. Let me know if you need any more info.

J

Thanks KJ, a friend came around yesterday and you have just confirmed what he said.It seems rather complicated and I don't have the tech skills to go that route..Thanks Jamie unfortunately my piano is not BT enabled so I cannot go that route which is why I would like to contact Roland to see if this can be done via cable. To me their website is quite difficult to follow and when I did get through I got a message that this site is no lionger available.

Hi Jack,

I could suggest two things:

- Yamaha MD-BT01, this plugs into your Roland's MIDI ports and effectively gives it Bluetooth MIDI, I have used this with my old Yamaha P-85 and it worked great with my iPad. I believe it should work with any MIDI ports, doesn't have to be Yamaha. You will have to launch the Yamaha app each time on your iPad to find and connect to the new Bluetooth interface, before you start using your other piano apps.

- If you prefer to use USB MIDI with an iPad then the trick is to find a USB MIDI interface that is fully compatible with the iPad. I have used the "E-MU Xmidi 1x1" with the Apple Camera Connection kit and it works great with my iPad. It is easier to use than the Bluetooth option above because the E-MU Xmidi is recognised by the iPad as soon as you plug it in. I have tried several other USB MIDI adapters but could not get them working with the iPad, the E-MU Xmidi was a lucky find after reading some Amazon reviews.

Hope that helps,

Charlie

That is assuming the FP30 has MIDI - mine did not but had Bluetooth...based on this link it would so seem that BT is not available in all markets;

https://www.roland.com/latinamerica/products/fp-30/specifications/

If I was betting on this using the above link there is no midi ports either...which would likely mean that only thing to work will be with a cable - let me see if I can connect my HP with the camera dongle and see if I can hook it up...brb

Hi Jack - well it can and should, at least it does on the Roland HP 605. I have just done the following:

Removed all BT references from the iPad (under BT settings and Partner App).
Disabled BT from my iPad so it doesn't go looking for BT devices (e.g. HP 605).
Connected an iPad camera kit dongle to a USB A to B type cable.
Connected the camera kit dongle end to the iPad and the USB end to the Computer USB port on the HP605.

Powered up the piano - launched the Partner App and immediately it connected without any further input - under Settings within the Partner App the Roland Piano shows up.

You definitely need the camera kit and A-to-B USB cable; below is what they look like (do you have both these)?

&

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MD821ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter

If you have both the above and it does not work - do you get any errors?

I am using this for a radio that did not have bluetooth. Maybe it would work for you -- but beware of possible latency issues.

Thanks for all the replies.Thats a whole lot of stuff to process and I will spend the next few days trying to work through the different options to find one that works.I have both cables, the Lightning camera cable is a Chinese knockoff as our Istore did not stock this item, but it seems ok. Using the IPad the only message I get once it is hooked up is "Your piano is not connected" The Emu kit options see to be the easiest option for me so I will look at this as well as the Yamaha app.So thanks again for all the help.

This would suggest to me that the unofficial cable is perhaps not-so-okay.
Are you able to use this cable connection in any other apps? If so, is it just the Roland app that is failing?

Cheers,
James

Back to square one. I had previously downloaded the Grand HD piano app which I was trying on my Casio so I connected the camera cable to the Casio using this app and I got a message saying "piano is connected" so the cables are O K.I then looked at the EMU and the Yamaha apps as suggested by gambci but they both use midi cables and the Roland does not have those midi sockets. Seem like the only option left is to use an Android emulator which at this stage I don't know enough about to start using.

Hi! The setup that jamiecw suggested should work (apple camera kit + usb a-b cable). Connecting a usb device to a lightning port on a iOS device using knock-off cables/adapters might work if you are lucky, but often it does not. With those unofficial adapters, it is usual for an iOS device to recognize the initial connection and then dropping it later. Get an official apple camera kit (usb 2)
