Gandhi I would expect it to be the same price. KJ can confirm though.

Gandhi I would expect it to be the same price. KJ can confirm though. Polished ebony (PE) models are usually a bit more expensive than the comparable "normal" models. It's not so obvious with Kawai, as the PE models (if you interpret the CS series as the "PE versions" of the CA series) had also different cabinets than the comparable non-PE models (slightly different e.g. for CS8 vs. CA67 and obviously different e.g. for CS11 vs. CA97). But look at for example Yamaha's pricing: The standard black CLP-685 B costs 3745€, while the polished black CLP-685 PE costs 3990€.

But look at for example Yamaha's pricing: The standard black CLP-685 B costs 3745€, while the polished black CLP-685 PE costs 3990€. I'm hoping that the PE version of the 78/98 might be around $500 USD more expensive than the standard simulated-wood finishes of the current models. Personally, if the higher price for the PE CA98 is indeed within $500, I'm definitely going to look seriously at this. I do know that the CS8 really caught my eye, and I would expect the PE CA98 to look just as nice. My honest opinion, though, is that the ebony version is going to be about $1,000 higher than the current finishes. This would still allow the CA series to sell for much less money than the Novus, and so would not interfere with sales of that piano. I'm guessing that there will apparently be no CS12, simulating a full upright PE piano case at a cost of perhaps anywhere from $7,000 to $8,000, as a unit between the CA and Novus series might very well cut into sales for both.

The CS version of the 9x was only ever that bonkers price in the US, in the RoW the cs11 was only a typical polished ebony premium over the ca97 and no where near the novus price point.

Hello Pete, Does this spell the end of the CS as we know it? The CS11 will continue to be sold in both ebony polish and the new white polish. Kind regards, James x

Hello folks,
Regarding pricing, the ebony polish finish will indeed be a few hundred dollars/euros more expensive than the standard wood finish models.
For detailed pricing/availability information, please contact your local Kawai dealer/distributor.
On a separate note I've added a new CA98 top image and simple ebony polish leaflet PDF to the Kawai Global site.
Kind regards, James x

Kind regards, James x After reading KJ's post, I get the feeling that the CA98 ebony model might actually sell for a price that is no more than $500 above the simulated wood models. Regardless, this would be a great present for my 70th birthday on July 29. That's quite a ways away, but it gives me time to study and play even harder, and to earn a good chunk of its price through part-time work. There's only one fly in the ointment: Do I really, really have to go back to work? Yecch. But I suppose if a person wants his toys...

Online stores in Europe are selling the new Kawai CA98 ebony polish at 4079 EUR and the non-polished versions at 3398 EUR. CA78 EP is 3379 EUR and 2795 EUR for non-polished versions. So that is an extra 700 EUR for the finish.

Ridiculous.

So that is an extra 700 EUR for the finish. Thanks for providing that info! Right now, for us in America it's really difficult to gauge just what that means. Converting euros to dollars, the price for the ebony CA98 would be about $4,700. But something isn't adding up. Kawai's advertised U.S. price for the Rosewood CA98 is $5,400. There is no way that the ebony edition is going to be $4,700. I *believe*, if memory serves me correctly, that our state's authorized Kawai dealer (about 130 miles to the west of my location) is selling the rosewood CA98 for about $4,800. With an increase of, hopefully, about $500 that would make the price $5,300. I could handle that. But at the moment, everything's up in the air, and I don't yet know what to think. We'll just have to wait.

When you say your dealer is selling the CA98 for $4800, you really mean that he's offering it at that price. The actual selling price is something else entirely.

When you say your dealer is selling the CA98 for $4800, you really mean that he's offering it at that price. The actual selling price is something else entirely. That's a good point. The potential buyer will never know the actual amount of money the dealer paid a piano company for any particular unit, or the price he would finally settle for from the customer. I would imagine that determining a proper minimum sales price would require taking quite a number of things into account. These include not only overhead costs, but demand for a particular brand or unit, and an estimate of what time of year might be best to stage a sale, hoping for volume sales from perhaps several hundred miles around. And of course, when to close out a model for, supposedly, a sacrificial price. Along that line, for quite some years my local music dealer was selling the Yamaha NU1 for $6,500 USD. It never sold at that price, (and he wouldn't listen to offers) so the thing sat in his store for several years, basically just rotting away. As the NU1X began to become available, he was ordered by corporate to sell the NU1 for $4,700, a savings to the customer of some $1,800. And even at that price, he probably made a decent profit. And the NU1X? Trying to push me into an immediate sale of the NU1, he told me that the NU1X would retail for close to $7,000. Gag me with a spoon.

I'm sorry but I don't see any logic in all that ... Why selling CS11 at the same time than CA98 PE ?? I was so hoping a CS12 with better aspect than initial CA98 BUT also with better sound, but at the end, almost 1 year waiting, it is the same CA98 which come out ... ! 1 year to have a polish ebony of an existing model, I don't understand. Nothing new for the sound reproduction, which, I maintain, is very boxy for this price range. Nothing new on the sooo many bugs related in this forum. Nothing new on the IHM which has so many flaws (it looks like iphone, but when you use it, you realize it is not at all ... eg. change in settings when you just want to scroll etc. .. everything has been said on this forum)
In short : this annoucement of the the new CA98 PE is like icing on the cake and brought my decision forward : good bye Kawai, I don't have any hope for improvement, I will look for my new piano elsewhere
sorry...

Thank you. I checked Thomann earlier, but didn't see the ebony polish finish listed in the main search results. I now see that it appears as an alternative finish after clicking the product page for a standard finish model. Kind regards, James x
