My wife has just bought me a Jarrett and Goudge upright. It’s from around 1910 to 1915 I think and has a nice tone but it’s in a bit of a state. It’s not worth spending a lot to have it restored so I’m going to try and do it up myself. At some point someone has done a really clumsy graining job on it trying make it look like mahogany. Underneath this muddy finish is some really beautiful wood, mostly veneer but some solid wood.

I’m planning on stripping off this finish and try and get it looking something like it would have originally. It sands off fairly easily, is that going to be my best bet to strip it?

I’ve sanded a small area in this photo, any idea what the wood is? Maybe walnut?

Finally, any suggestions how I should refinish it once it’s stripped. The panels are fairly small so I wondered if French polishing would be worth a try. How would a piano of this age have been finished originally?

Thanks for any help with this!

I am no expert, but it looks like walnut to me.

You could do worse than ask in the technicians' forum.

Thanks Philip, I’ll try the technicians forum.

As long as you don't get any glop into the works and you don't touch the back where the sound board is, you can refinish an upright piano pretty much like any other piece of old furniture.
