I think the only thing that really matters here is whether Marx had good piano technique or not.

Ha! It's pretty great to see how his technique, his finger movements are optimized for dramatic and comedic effect. Things you wouldn't do for any reason unless you were trying to grab the attention of people looking at your hands.
I’ve recently discovered this concerto in the Hyperion “Romantic Piano Concerto†series and immediately fell in love. It’s such a pity Marx isn’t a much more popular composer. He has also a great symphony. P.S. in the Hyperion release it’s Hamelin who plays it.

Yes, I loved it when I watched it as a teen (in what was still the Soviet Union... not for long). It has a great song in it, too (the clip focuses on the French woman Pauline Gueble who will follow her beloved Decembrist Annenkov to Siberia and marry him there):

I just discovered it myself. I also far prefer the Hamelin recording. I’d like to learn it someday. It’s my brand of cheese.
