I've gotta start setting an alarm or something when I have twenty minutes to spare before doing something else.
I'll just play a bit of something for a couple of minutes.
Next thing you know, an hour has gone by.....

Or 2 hours or even more. It’s easy to get lost in our music and lose all sense of time. I guess that’s a good thing, it means we’re really into what we’re doing.
It’s never too late to be what you might have been. -George Eliot

Whenever I play piano, I am in heaven, and I forget about everything else in the world. Hours pass by before I realize I'm thirsty or hungry.
Just me and my piano...

My husband often laments, “there she goes into Piano Landâ€, only to resurface an hour later. But the reality is after about an hour I need a break from the mental concentration. Wish it were otherwise.

It’s a blessing to have those sessions. No struggle to stay focused.

Not really piano related, but thirty years ago I was developing an interface between an electronic surveying instrument and a computerized controller.
The company driver dropped off the prototypes on a Friday afternoon, so I got started on it right away.
I worked on the project and it was going really well; just one of those things where everything was falling right into place and there was an accomplishment lurking around every corner. Great fun, really.
After working on it for a while I suddenly started feeling kind of sick. Gosh, what's wrong with me all of a sudden?
I did some investigation and discovered that it was 4pm on Sunday afternoon. I had apparently been working on the project without eating or sleeping and without noticing since mid-afternoon on Friday, so that explained why I suddenly wasn't feeling well.

Time distortion is normal for me during improvisation, also quality distortion. This latter usually takes the form of thinking my playing and ideas are very poor during the act of creation and up to a day afterwards. Many times I have convinced myself I should delete a recording only to be appalled, during later listening, at my readiness to do so.
