I’ll probably make a submission tomorrow. It is a [supposed to be] a sad piece that was originally written for a cello, and popular in the early 1900’s opera arena, with a piano accompaniment. I’ll be copying the main melody midi data to another track to add the cello. Even though it is NOT a technically challenging piece, it is somewhat a challenge to make it as it’s supposed to be . – heartfelt-. Manesset- "Elegy"

Today, I practiced and practiced and re-re-re-recorded my piece to the point of diminishing returns only to find out the dead line has been extended. It will give me time to record a video. Serge

I got a bit of a scare yesterday when I couldn't get a recording without making a silly mistake that I never make. Trying again today, yesterday's shenanigans proved to just be a case of the Mondays. Managed to get three nearly error-free recordings today, and just now submitted the one I was happiest with. Always a good feeling to finally have your piece submitted.

Oh dear I'm going to submit my least-bad one for this recital. I just really don't want to miss any more, but I can't tell you how much ground I lost over the 3 years or so that I was working a lot, and how much time it's taking me to even begin to get back. I've even had trouble playing with a metronome, even on slow - which has *never* been a problem for me. And I've been learning this piece (Easy Winners) since January, and years ago I learned The Entertainer (yea! serge88) in about 2 days. It's pretty discouraging. So you'll *really* hear me in the "this is where I am" mode - it's barely under my fingers, and tho I think I'm trying there's really little phrasing or dynamics - or even ragtime accents, for that matter I did play 3 ragtime pieces for a benefit in March, ones that I've known for years, and managed to get them at "acceptable", but this has been hard. Oh well, the occasional time that I hear just a glimpse of actual music keeps me going. And maybe just getting back to recitals will be the first step in an actual recovery. I certainly hope so :\

Well mines finally in. I didn't lose it during the recording process, but I did have to make numerous attempts to finally get an acceptable recording which included taking a few breaks for fresh air and swearing . On a side note, my recording this time sounds much better than the last recital since I cleaned my soundboard. I've never done this before and the difference is very noticeable. While I normally keep the entire piano very clean, I've never been able to clean out the dust that accumulates in and beneath those soundboard holes. Today before recording, I took a portable compressor with an air gun attachment (Harbor Freight $1.99) and blew compressed air in and around the soundboard holes. I'm embarrassed to admit how much dust blew out of there as it needed several passes to get it all out. I also blew (very carefully at a distance) the action and hammers which also had accumulated quite a bit of dust over time. The difference in sound quality after the cleaning (blowing) was significant. It went from a softer dull/muffled sound to a much brighter/crisper one that I liked much better. If you've never blown out the dust from within your soundboard (that you can't reach with anything), you may want to consider carefully blowing the areas out with compressed air. It made a big difference on my piano!

Good for you, Super-hunky! Our sound tech at dance just did that with our speakers and mixer - I wouldn't have thought of it. Now I need to do it with the (very old) piano at the hall. I couldn't believe how filthy it was when a friend and I were looking at how to fix the fall board hinges. Ich

If you've never blown out the dust from within your soundboard (that you can't reach with anything), you may want to consider carefully blowing the areas out with compressed air. It made a big difference on my piano! I like the mechanics of a piano just as much as the music it makes. You must have an upright, with a grand you could take off the keyslip , slide out the action, then clean away! Also use a electronic cleaner to spray the whipples, which would then maybe work efficiently without built up grime (but what do I know?) There is a book Piano Servicing, Tuning, and Rebuilding: For the Professional, the Student, and the Hobbyist 2nd Edition†Reibowitz… Tha explains a lot abut the mechanics and what a hobbyist can do on their own. I used to play on a grand I bought second hand, and as a hobbyist, really had fun tinkering it, but left it in a half playable condition- for now. So I play on a digital, -PX Casio- and even there, you have to clean the volume contact with an electronic cleaner so the volume stays non distorted and the balance stays the way it’s supposed to (appropriate volume to the keys pressed from the bass to the high treble.) Several years ago with my digital, I accidentally had a drip,- literally- of a petroleum based liquid fall on my keyboard between keys which swelled the rubber contact pad under the key where it landed. That made my keyboard nonfunctional every 7 keys; the cure was to use a dremel,- after opening the case and slightly sanding that edge of rubber contact that swelled, and all was back to normal. So it’s fascinating. Modern Technology began with a wind up clock and a piano . Anyway , I like tinkering with mechanisms, like today I bought a used "Kuerig" at a second hand store, but had to take it to the cleaners (literally) after watching you tube I had it apart then back together and cleaned. It works great and the coffee is good!!! Anyway, So, can’t wait for ecital 51! Even so , I took and easy choice of a piece. Til then ….

Blowing out the inside of a piano is great - except the dust goes everywhere - now you have to clean the house. I use a "swiffer" (dry) to get under the strings. If you loosen the dust in the nooks and crannies with a clean paintbrush you can vacuum it up as you go - and you don't have dust flying all over the house.
Don't do this unless you're confident, careful, and good with tools.

I use a leaf blower and a 2nd person holds up the whole house vacuum cleaner at the end of the piano to collect the dust. This discussion reminds me I need to do it again. Kind of messy, but necessary.

I like the Swiffer/brush/vacuum idea Sam. I'll try that next time before using the compressed air as it should make less dust that way. I'll still have to use the compressed air afterwards to get into the spots that are unreachable with anything else but the combo of using both methods should do the trick.
I'm not too concerned about the flying dust however as it settles quickly and is easily mopped up. Besides, we frequently dry mop, vacuum and dust the house courtesy of our Australian Shepherd (shedder) puppy!
