I have no experience in buying pianos, but have been researching the basics.

This 1950s Welmar got my attention. It's located 90km away from my home, I would have to take a bus to test it:

https://imgur.com/a/lyM1Xp4

The owner says it belonged to a serious pianist who cared a lot about it, but it hasn't been played for some years...
The price is ok for me, something like $800.

Could anyone experienced give advices about this case? In particular, do you see anything problematic in those images?

Thank you so much!

It is hard to tell from the pictures but it looked like the hammers are grooved quite much. Not a good thing that most likely needs to be addressed.

Ask the seller for close ups from the hammers.

I wouldn't. He would probably have to pay to have someone remove it.

I'm sure you could find a much younger piano and in better condition for your $800

I've never heard of a Welmar, but according to info on the net, it appears to be an ok quality brand.

But 1950 is getting on in years, and the $800 is top dollar for an instrument like this. There just isn't a high demand for relatively old pianos like this, and just getting rid of them can be an expensive process.

Bear in mind I'm from Australia, but things can't be that different where you are. In USA?

You shouldn't consider purchasing unless you've seen and tried it out. It has to play well and sound to your liking. And look ok too. Seriously, someone with an old piano like this will be happy just to be rid of it. Bear in mind, there are owners of old pianos who are deluded regarding the value of their 'valuable' instrument.

Moving pianos is a specialist job and is expensive. Get a quote for transporting it 90km. You may be in for a surprise. The cost of the piano plus moving costs are going to makethis purchase poor value for money.

If you really like it, I'd be offering a lot, lot less than $800, taking into account moving costs. .

Try looking for a younger Yamaha/Kawai or similar close to where you live. Much better value for money, and a better piano. Have you looked at many other pianos? You should. Makes comparisons easier. And buying from a music shop nearby might include free delivery.

Mateusqp, welcome to the forum. Are you in the UK?

I am not going to comment on the worth or the price of this particular instrument - but if you are considering spending $800 on it, I would strongly advise hiring a tech to check it out.

Welmar was a well known British manufacturer. I found the following on the web site of the "Piano Shop, Bath".

"Established in London in 1876, Whelpdale, Maxwell and Codd – later known as Welmar – began as the British importer for highly esteemed German Bluthner pianos. In the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, Bluthner built very fine instruments and were known particularly for their domestic baby grands and large uprights. Having learned from the high manufacturing standards of Bluthner pianos, Welmar began to produce their own instruments in Britain, with the Welmar grand piano especially being heavily based on Bluthner designs. Though the name is now a little forgotten, Welmar instruments are known for their high quality and sturdy construction and often restore very well."

Welmar pianos from the mid 20th century were very well made pianos, solidly built. They had good tuning stability, good tone, and good actions. They were heavily influenced by Blüthner but they were not Blüthner.

That said, this piano is nearly 70 years old, and I can see from the pictures it has rusty tuning pins meaning it has suffered high humidity.

From the pictures alone I'd be tempted to give it a miss. I don't know what you can get for 800 dollars of any currency, or 800 pounds. Generally you can't get much for that kind of money.

I suspect it might be an older Welmar that has had its case modernised and a 3rd pedal added. I don't know why, but it doesn't look original.

Sometimes older pianos cannot be tuned or may not stay in tune .It does look rather old and and neglected. So the question would be whether it's worth paying for the move and then the tuning and repairs ?

I will ask her for hammer close ups and the pins and strings which look a little rusty (thank you for pointing it out)...

I don't have many options in my country which is not USA or UK. An used Yamaha or Kawai would cost five times more...
I've been playing on a digital piano for a long long time already.

The owner sent me this video, for me it's not sounding that bad...

From the video, please don't buy this piano. It is in horrendous condition. Please, save yourself the trouble and if you can't afford an acoustic piano, buy an entry level digital piano. One of the Casio Celviano pianos (not the grand hybrid because of the price) would be better than this in every way.

There is too much wrong with this Welmar, it requires work which will likely cost thousands.

Believe me - and I talk from experience - you're more likely to be able to play Rachmaninoff 3 on a good digital piano than on a terrible acoustic!

Welmar's can be great pianos, but this isn't one of them. Joe80 is correct, pass on this one as it would be a money-pit.
