I have this book of excerpts of larger pieces for ballet class and I love this beautiful little one. I’m hoping there’s more to it that I can play for class (what’s written isn’t a lot of time; just sixteen dance counts when I usually need to play 64 or more) but I’m having trouble identifying it. Usually I can but this one I can’t seem to find.

I can read Russian but all that’s here is that it is César Cui and it’s just titled Allegretto. I don’t know anything by Cui that is simply named Allegretto and searching for things by Cui in f sharp minor didn’t bring anything up, either.

Anybody recognize this one?

Don't have access to my music right now, but could it be one of his preludes?

I went through opus 64 preludes and did not find it, unfortunately. Good idea, though. Thanks.

That was my first thought too...I have a CD with 14 of the op. 64 preludes on it, and it's not one of those.

If it's an arrangement or part of something longer it might take some work to find...Btw. Try to search by "fis moll" instead.

I’ll try... it might be an arrangement but there’s a heavy bias towards original works for piano. The editor seemed to just shorten them to fit more excerpts into one book. Usually, if I really like something, I find the original and see if I can’t expand the excerpt. That may even have been the expectation, from the editor’s standpoint, as all ballet accompanists in the Soviet Union were first and foremost classically trained pianists and would likely have a lot of these pieces in full in their own libraries. But obviously here I’ve hit a bit of a wall so far!

He wrote a lot of small works for piano so it may take some time, but I'm sure we'll find it somehow...

Here'a a list of his works:
