Between Kawai CA48 CA58, any difference on VSTi? #2756835

Hi all, I've been reading this informative forum for a while now and this is my first post.

I tried the GFC action and I like it better than RH3 (so, no ES8 or MP7SE)
And, I also tried the Korg G1 Air. While I didn't like the Korg action, I loved the Austrian Piano sound which I believe is a Bösendorfer.

So, putting these two together, I need to choose between CA48 and CA58. I'm mostly going to use external monitors for sound and a desktop computer for running the VST plugins (most likely Ivory II).

My question is: for this specific setup, is there ANY difference between CA48 and CA58?

(Also, I haven't tried the MP11-se. If anyone has tried both GF and GFC, could you explain the differences?)

No, not really. Both models utilise the same Grand Feel Compact keyboard action, and offer MIDI In/Out terminals, a USB-MIDI port, and Bluetooth MIDI connectivity. The CA58's piano sound specifications and customisation functions are superior to those of the CA48, and there's also the added flexibility of Line In/Out connectors. However, if you intend to bypass the instrument's built-in sounds in favour of a VST like Ivory II, and will be outputting that sound using external monitor speakers, this points are perhaps irrelevant.

I think you should definitely consider the MP11SE. The GF action is very similar to GFC, but offers longer keys and a longer pivot point, so will feel a little closer to an acoustic grand - especially when playing towards the back of the key surfaces. The MP11SE also occupies less space, and is more geared toward MIDI use (greater control over multiple MIDI zones, ability to assigned CCs to knobs etc.) than the more traditional, home-oriented CA48/CA58. However, there are some who argue that a stage piano+stand+speakers actually occupies more space than an all-in-one console DP.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
James

There's a question of theoretical interest:

. . . If the CA-48 and CA-58 use the same action, the only difference that could reasonably be expected between them:

. . . . . They might have different "velocity mappings" -- that is different relationships between "key velocity" and "MIDI velocity".

Now, if you're using them to drive a VST, I believe that _most_ VST's have the ability to re-map the MIDI velocity, via a user-specified relationship between:

. . . {keyboard-out MIDI velocity} to {sound-generator input MIDI velocity}.

So even if the CA-58 and CA48 have different velocity maps, you can make them "look the same" to a VST, when you play them.

I don't think this will be a problem for you. Adjusting the VST's MIDI-velocity map is something that you _can_ tweak, but you don't _have to_ tweak.
