Is it $10,000 plus tax or is sales tax included in the $10,000?

Question -

I am auditioning a Kurzweil SP4-7. It comes with a full warranty, but it was a customer return. It has some scratches on it, but works perfectly. I got it for $650 w/free shipping. Someone at Kurzweil told me that all of the SP4-7 units were actually built between 2010-2011, none later. Any units bought since then were from back then. The SP6 is essentially a replacement. The SP6 is a model from later 2017.

Someone very familiar with Kurzweil suggested to me that given how old the SP4-7's design is, he wouldn't buy it unless he could get it for about $450. I have seen a customer return SP6 for a bit over $1000.

The SP6 has half-pedal damping and string resonance along with 2 new pianos, but it's also an 88 key weighted keyboard. It comes in at 27 pounds vs. the 24 pounds of the SP4-7. The SP6's interface is easier to use and is somewhat more tweakable. It also is capable of holding far more user created patches. It has 4 arpeggiators. Yet overall, it is still an essentially WYSIWYG type of keyboard. Tweaking to the factory preset sounds is extremely limited. The SP6, like the SP4, is designed to be a basic keyboard with lots of sounds rather than those who are doing a lot of experimenting.

Still, after playing both, the SP4-7 is really quite capable. I could live with it. Many of the sounds are very close to the SP6. I got some help from Matthew at American Music & Sound to figure out how to go beneath its surface interface (not easy given the poorly written manual).

My question to those who may be more knowledgeable about these two keyboards is, how much do you think is fair to pay for the SP4-7 that would make it a good deal in your eyes, if you were looking for a more basic keyboard like the SP series? Is the $650 (originally $1100 street when available for purchase new) too much given that I could get a SP6 for a bit over $1000 shipped ($1300 street)?

Hi Jeff,

While this is a good question, this stickied thread is reserved for reporting prices paid on DPs. So it may be worthwhile to repost this (or self-Report and ask a mod to help move the post) as a new question and new thread in the forum, so that you get the right audience to help answer the question?

USER LOCATION: East Coast USA
MAKE: Kawai
MODEL: ES110
CONDITION: NEW
PRICE PAID: Gross: $627 ($730 - 20% plus sales tax + shipping): Net= $2 (essentially a 3 for one trade: Casio PX130, Korg SP280, Roland Juno Gi and received $25 gift card)
DELIVERY CHARGE: $4.95 but might be waived
VENDOR LOCATION: East Coast/and Warehouse
VENDOR NAME: GC
PURCHASE DATE: June 2018

I received my exchange unit today and it seems to be much better than the replacement. I've favored Kawai and Casio more the last several years because they have had employees such as Kawai James , Alan from Kawai as well and Mike Martin who have taken enough interest to share posts and answer questions.

I needed a portable 25 pound board to with a line out as I did not particularly ever feel strong affection to the PX130. I did the trade ins in store and had the piano shipped. I am tempted to get pro coverage but it has the 3 year warranty.

** BUYING ADVICE ** for US

After going thru the most recent prices paid, some are really good deals and others are really not good deals.

I recently went thru this process with Yamaha, Roland and Kawai. The bottom line is any dealer can do at least 35% off of the list price (not selling price). List prices are readily available. And you can often get delivery included.

I was looking at the CA78 prices paid and one person paid $4500 + $275 delivery. The List price is $4999 and selling price is $3999. So a good price would have been $3250+tax.

I know people are hesitant to bargain but you will save a lot of money. Would you pay the asking price for a car?

thanks,
rob

This thread was made un-sticky three months ago. It is now linked into the "Master Sticky Thread".
It seems, though, that this change has made the thread nearly invisible. It has received only a half dozen posts duing these months.
Surely more people have purchased pianos this summer?

I think that it ought be made sticky once again so that it stays near the top of the list for better visibility ... and for more posts.
Opinions?

I wad thinking of making the same suggestion. The master sticky thread is great to find a top thread you're actively looking for, but if the thread isn't above the fold on the home page, it's out of sight out of mind.

Apparently there's a delicate balance between top threads that need to be visible to remind people to contribute, and ones that just need to be accessible on demand without taking up screen real estate.

I'd vote to raise this thread back to the top level.

-1....link in master sticky

could change name of master sticky to info center or something more descriptive.
also remove the useless text and organize the links better.

but zero reason to add a stcky thread to take room at top.
especially a thread that is mostly historical.

just say NO to stickies! thumb

Agree this should be a sticky again. While many long-term readers knew where to find it, I think the move to the master thread folder hid it from many newer readers and, this, weakened its strength as an information database. If new people -- the ones most likely to have purchased a piano -- can't find it, they're not posting the details of their purchase.

Importantly, it's not a question of whether they could find it. It's whether or not they would even know to look.

Edit: Of course if the idea is to protect dealers from price competition and decrease street price transparency in various markets, then making this thread a sticky again would not help.

I was not the first to suggest that there be a master sticky ... with the Prices Paid thread and other threads linked inside of it.
But I was chief architect of its implementation. So blame me for the downside that resulted.

I see there's good support for re-stickifying the Prices Paid thread: Agent 88, ArtlessArt , Gombessa.
So ... a couple of things:
1. I'll wait a while to see how others respond to this idea, partly because more input would be good, and partly because I'm busy today with a wedding this evening and a return flight home tomorrow.
2. If the idea holds up I think some additional input would be valuable, as in Jefso's suggestion to "remove the useless text and organize the links better" in the master sticky. So ... please make specific suggestions about that.,

yeah, if there were a total of 5 forum members, that would be good support....

come on, posters against stickies! speak up!

one sticky properly titled and organized, with all the links is all that’s needed.
