Just curious...

I've known of the occasion when a part for a piano was a bit hard to come by. But in this day and age, there are 3D printers that are becoming cheaper and more available to the masses. As such, I got to wondering if a tech looking for an unusual or not so available part could perhaps 3D print one (or more) if it was difficult to find an appropriate replacement?

I wouldn't be surprised if someone were able to 3D print a substantial amount of piano parts. It probably wouldn't be cheap to do so. But maybe possible.

Like I said, just curious.

Mr Grant Benton in England prints parts for Lindner piano actions - see the Lindner page of my website.

I've 3D printed a few piano tools for myself, and I know of companies that actually sell 3D printed tools for pianos.

If you have a 3D printer already the materials are quite cheap because you're only using enough plastic to make the parts themselves (vs starting with a block of plastic and machining away the parts you don't need). The expense is the time of drafting and designing the parts and waiting for it to print. I imagine some day in the future there will be an online exchange where people upload the piano parts they've designed. Jacks could be a good candidate for 3D-printing, I think, though some after-processing might be necessary so that the rough edges don't scuff the buckskin on the hammer butt or knuckle.

Anthony,

I would be interested in these kind of tools. Many of the tools we carry are not required to have substantial strength, yet being made of steel or brass add up to a lot of weight being carried around.

There's already an exchange for 3d printable parts, and it's been around for years. I don't see any piano action parts offhand:

Printing wound strings would be a challenge even if they couldn't be used smile

Is printable plastic material completely biodegradable?

Ian, it depends on what you print with. A common plastic for beginners is PLA. It has a low melting point and doesn't shrink much when it cools. That is biodegradable. Another common plastic is ABS which is more resilient than PLA (it's what LEGOs are made from) but definitely not biodegradable. There are tons of other plastics that can be printed but these are probably the most common for "extrusion" printers (the most common type for hobbyists).

I approached a maker of laser powered metal deposition machines about applying weight to bass string cores. The first question they asked was; "Piano strings, that is interesting. How many millions of dollars per year can we sell in piano strings?".

The answer I gave was maybe a million if we are very lucky. They said; "Oh, that is a problem".
