Hello,

I am still in the process of finding my first grand piano. The local dealer can get a 1992 Yamaha G3 for $10,500. This would be a "gray market" Yamaha, and I have done a lot of reading where that is concerned.

What I would like to know is what makes a G3 different from a C3? I have seen so many used C3's around, but they are running slightly higher in price. I have not played a G3 - and I would get the opportunity to play this piano and have it checked out by a technician before committing to buy.

Also, is this a fair price?

Thanks in advance,

Beth

Whatever difference there ever was - it never could have amounted to 1000's of $$

If the design of the C3 was actually better - they still didn't goldplate the cast iron frame... shocked

I've seen many good older G3's and many just so-so C3's.

For one, the G3s were never as bright as the C3's, at least generally speaking.

As usual, each piano has to be judged by its own [personal] merits.

You may watch your $$ buying used at a time many good or even better pianos than the G3 are entering the market new!

Shop carefully!

The G3 had less sculpted casework, lower grade hammers with softer voicing, no soft-close fall (although earlier C3s also lacked this feature) different frame design and scaling. The C3 is inspired by Steinway designs and features duplex scaling as well as the casework ameliorations. The action is broadly similar in both pianos, both of which are excellent instruments.

Some 'grey market' G series Yamaha grands had a celeste fitted.
