In the last 36 hours I had the unusual opportunity to play three pianos: a Cunningham Parlour Grand, and Steinway O rebuilt by Cunningham, and a Chickering rebuilt by Ed McMorrow!

In alphabetical order:

Chickering

The Chickering was originally built in 1979, if I heard correctly. I did not catch the model, but it was relatively short. That said, it had been rescaled, and--in spite of it's size--produced a surprisingly impressive bass, both resonant and clear (IMO). Because it had been rescaled, I poked, prodded and experimented across each of the breaks, and they were virtually undetectable. I believe that Ed had also reworked the action and keys, and it definitely felt "different" to me. I won't try to quantify it, save to say that it took me a minute to adjust to it (not a criticism, just an observation). Ed had reworked the entire piano extensively. I don't recall everything that had been done to it (perhaps Ed will address that). All-in-all, it was quite a charming piano.

Cunningham Parlour Grand

The Parlour Grand had some pretty high expectations to live up to, based on what I'd read about it here, and live up to them it did. Fit and finish was excellent, and it seems to be built of quality materials. To my ears, it had a rich and pleasing tone across the entire compass, and it also had an even and responsive action. Perhaps the most important thing is that I had just played the Steinway O, and the Cunningham held it's ground. It is a very nice piano!

Steinway O

The Steinway O was originally built abut 1910 (if I read the serial number correctly). I probably spent more time looking it over than playing, because it's the work done that most interested me. That said, the rebuild quality was excellent. I'm loathe to enter the "better than new" argument, but one would be hard pressed to distinguish it from a brand new piano. Naturally, it was all anyone could expect from a Steinway, and lived up to everything that I would expect from Cunningham Pianos.

Conclusion

It was a pleasure to play all three. My conclusion is that my own piano is a little overdue for some regulation and voicing.

Sounds like fun, Retsacnal!

I've played a few very nice pianos else ware and realized that what I had at home was pretty nice too. I hope my pianos forgive me for the piano-infidelity... smile

Ah, I think we only need look at your screen name closely to see where you have been... wink

I had thought of going there myself since I am pretty local, but the high registration fee, even for just the weekend admission, was a serious deterrent.

Yes, it was a fun day. Of course, you can play that many without leaving home! wink

I've used "Retsacnal" as an ID on a number of sites over the years, and people often assume that I'm from Lancaster! But it's just the name of the street I lived on in my hometown spelled backwards.

They gave me a name badge. I was tempted to have them put Retsacnal on it, but decided not to reveal my secret identity! wink

Maybe you should swing by. The folks there were all awesomely friendly.

So Retsacnal,

Did we meet? Do I know you IRL? I am so intrigued by this. Also, where was Ed's piano? I missed that.

Also, thank you for the kind words, Retsacnal.

No, unfortunately we didn't meet. When I visited the Cunningham booth, no one was there. While I played, someone returned (Jason?). He left me alone, but when I finished we chatted for a minute. He said you'd arrive the next day. I saw you in the lobby at one point--recognized you from videos you've posted--but you were talking with a some people, so I thought I'd just catch you later, but when I went back down to the expo on Saturday afternoon, it was closed up already. frown

Ed's piano was in one of the breakout rooms, just above the expo room I think.
