where should I look for the serial number on an old Henry F Miller grand? I am trying to ascertain the age of the piano, but it is at least 40+ years old (not a modern china HFM). It's a 7' grand.

Thanks-

If the number isn't on the plate, you could try removing the key slip and looking at the edge of the key frame. Some makers put the SN there.

Also try the soundboard, where it may be embossed. Those can be difficult to see.

I just tuned one last week. On this grand, the serial number was stamped on the soundboard. Stand centered at the keyboard and look at the soundboard about 1 or 2 inches beyond the dampers. If there is dust on the soundboard, you probably won't be able to see the serial number.

You may find this grand is much older than 40-years-old. If you find the serial number, post it here, and someone will be able to give the approximate age.

I am waiting anxiously to find out how old the 7 ft grand Henry F. Miller that Krash is "looking into"..

Hopefully it turns out to be of a good vintage and in great shape.

I love my Henry F. Miller 1907 upright.

A nice 7ft grand Henry F. Miller grand that is in great shape would be a dream.

Krash, Don't keep us waiting to long.

OK well if any of you have followed my post on the Piano Forum, I was considering a new piano vs. this old one. This piano is in a church that resides in the same bldg as our recording studio, and it's about 1/2 hr drive from my house and I haven't been there to look at it myself. However, my partner at the studio did take a look and could not find any serial number anywhere on the piano. Knowing exactly where to look would be of great benefit, and maybe I could clear some dust and look.

The owner of the piano bought it used and most likely for a song (no pun intended). He's willing to let it go for cheap, but so far I am not willing to spend the money because this piano is in really rough condition and my family doesn't like the looks of it at all, they prefer a new instrument that will be much better "decor".

This piano has anemic overall volume, noticeable soundboard cracks (glue joints open), some buzzing, none of the B-flats are remotely in tune even though it was tuned several months ago (loose pins most likely?), keys drop only about 1/4" (guessing every felt piece in the action is gone), action feels stiff, some dampers don't work just right, veneer is loose along the treble side, the desk is cracked, the decorative edge of the piano cabinet is variably chipped, cracked, chunks missing, and the black finish is checked (which condition supports my 40+ year old age estimate), and in general the piano looks very rough.

So, it's basically only useful as a candidate for reconditioning and finish restoration. I am not a piano technician but I am an adventurous do-it-yourselfer and pretty good instrument (guitar/drum) tech and finish carpenter, and I can follow instructions pretty well. So I'm only barely considering this piano, and if I were to take it, I'd be doing the refinishing and action repair myself. There is a 5-foot-ish new Yamaha in the room alongside this piano that is better in tone and action in every possible way... much louder, better bass, etc.

I'm going to go by the studio later today and I'll look again myself for the serial number. If I can establish that it's pre-1930 then I might more seriously consider it, maybe just move it down to the studio rather than bring it home and buy a new piano for home. I could buy it for $700.

Sad to this, but the old Miller is probably not a good candidate for rebuilding. It has almost surely reached the end of its usable life.

yes that's what I figured. My only offer on the piano is that I will move it, but no cash offer. So I will take it for free, and probably move it into the recording studio and see about making it playable but don't worry about the finish or cabinet. I don't think the owner is going to sell it if he is unwilling to give it away.

How sad that this 7ft grand Henry F. Miller piano fell into such a sad state of neglect and abuse and now it has so little pulse it is almost dead.

JMO It could take a lot of money, hard work, materials and parts, and time to bring it back to life it seems to me, and you might not end up with a satisfactory result at the end of the process jmo though. I am not a tech though; just a happy old Henry owner.

If you decide to do this project I wish you luck on the journey.Keep us posted also if you undertake the project.

Did you ever get the serial number and age?
Still wondering. Any pictures?

No I haven't made it by to check on the serial number again. The owner has not responded to my last offer of "I'll haul it away for you, no charge". I think "silence" means "no thanks" but he's had it for sale for at least 4 months now at sub-1K so I don't think it's going anywhere otherwise.

I wouldn't be scared of using this as a recording instrument even if I had to redo the action felts, level the keys and do some action repair, even repair the soundboard where it's buzzing and glue down the loose veneer. Basically get it playable, tuneable, if possible without replacing the wires or pin block. However, the fact that it just doesn't sound even remotely like a 7' grand should sound totally blows it for me.

I don't know. Maybe we should take it, rework the action a little bit and install a TFT recording strip and make it the world's most enormous dedicated MIDI controller. We have some incredible piano sample libraries.

We have one of these grands in the nursing school lounge here at the University where I work. It's a 7 foot grand I think serial number 49325. There is a tuner that takes care of it and it plays well.

Often the serial# on vintage HF Millers is located under the keyboard on the keybed, so you will need to remove the action to find it.
