After using digital pianos as controllers for years, and generally being dissatisfied with the narrow velocity response of many of these, I'd appreciate some recommendations for a good feeling weighted 88 note controller.

Interestingly, Yamaha's digital pianos that I've had respond well to their built in sounds, but less so when they're used as controllers. I would also consider a DP that had a responsive velocity curve.

Right now I'm considering the Roland A-88, and the M-Audio Hammer 88 mainly. I've read plenty about the A-88 but nothing much about the Hammer 88. Does anyone have an opinion on the Hammer? My budget is up to about $1000. No VPC1 for me.

There's velocity curve software available and that I've used, but I'd prefer something that works well right out of the box.

At that price, I think your best bet is likely the StudioLogic SL88 Grand: https://www.studiologic-music.com/products/sl-grand/

It retails for $899, but small discounts can typically be found or obtained by asking.

Thanks Tom, I hadn't considered Studiologic, so I'll look into that. In the past, with their VMK188 plus I had some issues, but that was some time ago.

Another option which might be found cheaper is the Casio PX-5S. They are frequently available for significantly less than retail, and seem to be a good value option, especially for the weight. Lots of information out there about its pros and cons, but off the top of my head I recall a lack of expression pedal, perhaps no continuous sustain pedal option, and a keybed that gets looser/noisier over time. Personally, I just can't get over the look, but would be very interested if/when Casio updates the model. I have seen used/demo models at significant discounts.

I think you nailed it with the 'cons' of the PX5S, and I'm with you about the look of the thing. Aesthetics aren't the most important thing, but they can distract, just like tons of buttons and knobs and blinking lights wink

Would you consider a used/second hand VPC1?

Hi James,
Unfortunately I don't have the space for a VPC1 now. I had one a few years back and really enjoyed it!

Komplete Kontrol S88 or the StudioLogic SL88 Grand I would recommend. I wouldn't recommend purchasing any controller with synth action/semi weighted keys as the action is to light and lacks realism for solo piano playing.

Thanks Jay, someone else had mentioned the SL88 grand and it looks very good to me.

Ah, I see. wink
Just curious though, when you say you don't have enough space for a VPC1, I assume you are referring to the depth and/or height, yes? In terms of width, the Roland A-88 is actually around 6 cm wider, due to the left-mounted control panel.

Kind regards,
James

Hi James,

It's the depth of the VPC1 more than anything that would be an issue. The length, or even the length of an A-88, wouldn't be a problem, nor would the height.
