I'm looking for a starter piano for my kids. The one I'm looking for is a Kawai upright, serial number 1163836, seller doesn't know the model, can anyone help me to find more info about this piano? Seller is asking 1000, is it the true value?

All I can say is that it seems to be from about 1980. Without knowing the size or any other information, I think that the best bet would be to have someone knowledgeable, such as a piano technician, look at it for advice.

A lot depends on the currency. 1,000 Rupees would be a very good deal. 1,000 Kuwaiti Dinars would be expensive.

Looks like a good starter Piano but strongly recommend having a tech look at it before purchase.

Keep in mind that from a private seller, you will have to pay for moving, and then tuning. It is best to have any pre-owned acoustic piano evaluated by a qualified piano technician, but that can cost around $100 or so on average. Not sure about your particular area, but professional piano movers might charge around $250 or so to move the piano. A basic tuning will cost around $75 to $100, depending on your locale.

So, if you really like the piano and think it would meet your needs, you might negotiate with the seller a bit; maybe have them share some of the expense. Or, just make an offer and see what happens. $1000 from a dealer, including sales-tax, moving and a first tuning might not be a bad deal, if you liked the piano. $1000 straight private sale might not be such a good deal, unless you really loved the piano.

If the price has dropped to $800 in the ad, chances are, they want to get rid of the piano and are willing to negotiate.

Kawai pianos in general have an excellent reputation...

A few months ago, I saw a used Kawai K-15 (1990) in a store and they wanted to sell it for $3.5K plus tax and delivery fees. They told me a new one costs close to $6K, but I wasn't sure if they told me a true / honest price.

I just saw one similar to this one, both 1980, it was refurbished, piano store wants to sell it for $2500, so I guess this one won't be a really bad deal.

console size uprights can indeed be attractive in appearance but be sure to give it a thorough test playing, because performance and response are what you're looking for, even at 800 bucks. for many of us, in that budget which usually involves compromise, something that plays and sounds great but doesn't look as perfect would have greater overall utility value.

Condition is everything..... and that means the condition of the parts not the cabinet. You can’t compare this piano to a refurbished one in terms of price, because you have not had this one checked by a technician to determine the condition, and you are not factoring in the work that has been done on the one for 2500. Please do not make assumptions about whether this is a good deal or not..... if you do not have inspected, you are just guessing

You also cannot assume that one that is claimed to be refurbished has had anything more than cosmetic work done to it.

It would be somewhat useful to have this information for several reasons. But, dog person's advice is the true word, the world around:

In the US, a basic examination for condition by a qualified piano tech will run about $100 to $120. There are other types of exams for other purposes, such as providing testimony in a court case, or providing an insurance valuation for a very valuable instrument. These take more time and so they cost more. If the piano in question is not in tune already for the inspection, there could be some question as to whether it will hold a tune (if not, that is bad news and you should definitely keep looking). So the tech would have to begin by tuning, and these inspections will cost somewhat more. Still, this modest expense could save you from an ocean of tears.

If rachm2 is writing from within the US, he or she might find a qualified piano tech by contacting Piano Technicians' Guild http://ptg.org , Not all good techs belong to the Guild, but those who do meet a minimum standard for proficiency, and subscribe to a code of ethics. They also have access to a program of continuing education, and have a deep field of consulting expertise available to them, in case of some arcane question.

There is also a variety of piano refurbishing known as a "leaf-blower refurbishment" This is an actual technical term. All that means is that the dust and leaves have been blown out of the case with a leafblower, and no other refurbishment has been done. Your own tech, employed by you, paid by you alone, and having no other financial interest in the sale, would be able to point this out to you in short order.

Even a very cheap used piano will cost money to move, and will cost again to have someone take it to the dump if it proves to be unplayable by your kids. Indeed, avoiding this expense is the sole objective for many people who are trying to sell an old piano.

I do wish you good luck with your search. This is one time when you can make your own luck, before you find yourself stuck with a piano your kids cannot learn to play on.
