Hello, I can't figure out if this is fixable, but the music rack on my piano is extremely vertical (not quite 180 degrees, but probably not too far off) and not proving very effective in holding books in place. I would think a slight decline angle would be better suited for book support, but also can't imagine this design is by accident. Maybe it's a Charles Walter thing?

I presume from what you write that you are referring to an upright piano, not a grand because on most grands the angle of the music desk is adjustable.

I encountered a similar problem when, several years ago, I was trying out a Schimmel upright. That was a deciding factor for me; if the music rack won't hold the music because the rack is too vertical, it doesn't serve most pianists well. Without knowing how the rack on your Charles Walter is assembled and attached, it would be difficult to say whether it can be re-adjusted.

Can you post pictures?

On the Charles Walter furniture console pianos, many of the music racks are permanently placed with a wooden brace at the bottom (in the back of the rack).

If the piano is designed like this, that part can be planed down a bit to give you more angle.

I hope that helps,
