He's not sight-reading - he's played it before, and playing from sheet music.

........like most of us.

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."

Felipe, it's quoted sight reading, not "first sight reading".
He's practising it outside with people around him,it's written on his notebook at a certain time in the video, find it.
Furthermore his presumed first sight reading would be exponentially more difficult if perfomed on that piano, with all white keys but the last octave, and so horribly out of tune, and the score is for two pianos, therefore he has to jump the score for the orchestra reduction.
No way. He already knows it.

This gets into what "sight reading" means. I'm with what bennevis is implying as its meaning.

More and more I see the meaning getting fuzzied up. I hope it's not like "sight reading" now also really does legitimately mean any time someone is using the score while playing.

To me, sight reading is like being pregnant or not being pregnant: either you're playing the piece from the score for the first time, or you're not; there aren't degrees of it. Any next time that you use the score while playing the piece, that's not sight reading any more; it's using the score.

(Or, as most people say, using "the music," which is a different discussion, on which I know I'm in the minority and always will be.) grin

A similar thing is how "perfect pitch" is now sloppily used as also including relative pitch....

"Sight reading" automatically means the first time.

then the title is wrong since it's obvious that is not the first time he reads it and play it.
The post was about Felipe was astonished by the skillness of this guy in performing "first time reading" rachmaninoff.

that's why he wrote "how this is even possible?"

This has been posted before, but it's a really fun watch. Valentina Lisitsa did a video of herself learning a piece for the first time. I think this would count as "a prima vista" and it's impressive to see what can be done when you're a professional!

And that page turner I'm guessing isn't just someone who happened along. They know each other, she knows the score....
