The link was broken. Fixed. Interesting although the new director isn't pointing any fingers and only saying he felt "uncomfortable" before.

across the stone, deathless piano performances

And it happens in other competitions as well, for example, the conducting competition:

http://slippedisc.com/2016/10/busoni-competition-refuses-to-pay-prizes-after-contestants-cry-fraud/

In the 2010 Chopin piano competition, the winner Avdeeva attended Fu T'song's masterclasses as a student, and Fu T'song was in the judging panel. The second prize winner, Ingolf Wunder, however, appeared to have studied with Adam Harasiewicz, who was also one of the judges...

The problem with these is that even if the contestant won fair and square, there would always be doubts as to whether they had an unfair advantage with their teachers being in the judging panel. It is not good for the reputation of the competition if these are not disclosed properly. In the 2015 Chopin piano competition, Dang Thai Son did not vote on contestants who were his students, so that was at least a bit fairer. But I would prefer he abstained from being a judge completely for that competition.

In the very first Leeds Competition, the winner, Michael Roll, was Fanny Waterman's prize pupil. She said she was very embarrassed that he won.

What became of him?

What's apparent is that the Tchaikovsky has the best track record of any piano competition, in terms of the subsequent fame of its winners - Cliburn, Ashkenazy, Ogdon, Sokolov, Gavrilov, Pletnev, Douglas, Berezovsky, Matsuev, Trifonov....with hardly any duds - yet it was one of the ones most often charged with the teacher-juror problem (not to mention politics - look at all those Russians.....).

However, I do agree that the most effective jurors will be concert pianists who don't teach. I've heard many radio & TV interviews with them and they seem to have a much more open outlook on matters of interpretation (with a few notable exceptions, who shall remain nameless) than teachers who tend to be quite rigid about what they consider "acceptable". Even interpretations they don't particularly like, let alone contemplate. That would mean that mavericks like Pogorelich would be less likely to get thrown out early.........

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."
