I have recently aquired an old upright from a neighbor. Upon doing a little cleaning I discovered that it is a Wing & Son piano. Now, depending on who you speak with it is rare and valuable or just fire would. Anyways, I am desperately trying to find information on the company or on the piano itself. Note, I cannot locate the serial number and no one in my area seems to know where to look either. HELP!!!

Wing & Son pianos were manufactured from 1875 to 1928 in New York. From 1900 they made pianos with 5 pedals and bells (talk about selling 'bells and whistles' smile ). They produced about 800 pianos per year, and were the pioneer of 'mail order pianos'. Realistic value, fire wood. But to a collector of pianos, who knows?

Actually, I played a rebuilt Wing & Sons and loved it! Had a wonderful tone (with rich harmonics and a bassy bass) and the action wasn't bad at all. Perhaps you won't make money off of it, but if you rebuild it, it has the potential of being a really decent piano.

BTW, the friends who bought this restored piano paid $4k for it. Now many would scoff, and say they could've had a new Korean studio for that. My retort, "Yeah, what's your point?"

In their case, they got a better piano.

I sold a restored Wing & Son Upright for 6K. It Had a gorgeous Mission style burled walnut case and tone as strong as the day it was made. Of course an orginal hardback catalog was included with the sale....so the buyer could know what train station the piano would be delivered to.

To the firewood axeman:

We rebuit a Wing&Son 5 pedal upright last year.
It turned out to be a spectacular piano.

Never judge a book by its cover.

Or a piano ........sight unseen!

Least of all....don't swing your axe in the darkness of the night.....

Thank you for the welcome Penny. I am a tuner/tech for 26 years and also do alot of restoration of grands. The Wing is the only upright I have restored in years but this piano was crying out for it. It was about to go to the dump and most here would have agreed...it deserved a new life. And someone did fall in love with it. And Norbert agrees about Wings...oh happy day!

What did the 4th & 5th pedals do? confused

(It seems as if there are plenty of "wing" pianos in Germany. They're called "Flügel."

I am not sure of the exact details of the pedals but its almost like a harpsichord sound the hammers hit a metal pole. Does anyone have photos of any Wing & son pianos?

Go to www.pianomuseum.org. Click on the master inventory list and scroll down. There are pictures of two Wing & Son 5 pedal uprights.

My photos are pre-digital and have not scanned them yet. But I did crawl the internet booksellers 5 years ago and found plenty of old catalogs out there. They are worth the 20 or so bucks you'll spend for the history and great pictures. A friend even has one that originally came with 3D glasses to view the circassian walnut grain in the color drawings.

Thanks everyone for your help!! I have found a lot of old catalogs, books, and ads from Wing & Son and I would love to get my hands on something that actually featured this piano.

Wing Piano's main claim to fame (around here) is that Larry; our resident "haul-all-the-big-o-uprights-to-the-dump" advocate, actually owns one of these. His is (or at least was) a 5 pedal model. He also has (or had) a Mathushek, but he never speaks of it.

Cool piano, fun to own even as a curiosity, maybe even worth rebuilding if you plan to hang on to it for a while. Cost of a good rebuild will surely outstrip it's finished value (and they're not terribly rare - I see them around every now and then), but still cool.

What sort of pictures do you want to post? If you have your own digital pictures to post, the easiest way to do it is to upload them to Photobucket.com, then copy the line in the box marked "IMG" on Photobucket and paste it in to this Piano Forum reply box.

If you are looking to post a picture from the net, right click on the picture, left click on "Properties", highlight and copy the line where it says "Address", open the Piano Forum reply box, go to the "Full Reply Form", click "Image" at the left side of the form and paste the properties information in the pop up box that comes up.

That way, you can post a picture of a Wing Piano like this one: (right click on the picture and you can see the "properties" information - I got this picture from Pianomuseum.org.).

E mail if I was not clear and I'll try to walk you through the process.

Enjoy!

Here's another Wing that is listed as "Sold" at Vintage Piano Shop in North Carolina. $8995 was the asking - no mention of final sale price.

Mighty rough when they started:

[Linked Image]

Mighty fine to look at when complete:

[Linked Image]

The $8995 price makes me wonder just how thorough the "refurbishment" was, and I'd want someone knowlegeable to look it over before I considered purchasing it.

No matter - I'm not going to buy it, and it's still cool

Thanks, yea, I've seen both of those and about twelve others. Mines a bit different. I'll try to post the pics for you later today. Supposedly its a 1911. Its only got 4 pedals, but I love it. Landfill material or not I don't think I would part with it. And hey, I got it free so its not like I have invested a whole lot into anyways. I would just like to know a little more about it and what it is actually suppose to look like. I believe that most of it is still original except two pieces which are not stamped.
