Last week I bought a 1999 Kawai RX-5. Here it is:

Kawai RX-5

It definitely needs a tuning and to a lesser extent some regulating /voicing. It even has a Dampp Chaser on it!

Can't wait for the tech to get here. It sounds beautiful even as out of tune as it is....

Congrats! I know you’re anxious for the tech visit, but I hope you will let the piano settle in a few weeks first

Happy practicing. 😊

I should add my deep gratitude to forum member "Rickster" for turning me on to this piano. I wouldn't have found it otherwise!

Thanks Rick!

Thanks Rick!

You are more than welcome, Marcus. Fact is, all I did was provide you with a name and a phone number, which you asked me for in a PM (just so folks here won't think I was involved in the sales transaction:-).

You did all the leg-work, contemplating, wondering, thinking about it, agonizing over a decision, tech inspection, coordinating, and then coming to a final conclusion. After looking at the piano in your pictures I'm wondering if maybe I should have went ahead and bought it myself. smile

I honestly think you did really well on the RX5, even though the piano needs some TLC.

Congratulations again on your new-to-you Kawai RX5! I wish you and your family many years of enjoyment with it!

Rick

Very impressive.
I wish I had one of those.
Although I think I would place mine on a nice red oriental carpet to really show off the black finish.

That is in the works Joe. I bought a Home Depot carpet for the time being until I can make a trip to Dalton, GA (carpet capital of the USA) to find something more to my taste! I like the red idea!

Hey Marcus,
Before making the trip up to Dalton, you should check out auctions and tag sales in your vicinity.
Sometimes you can pick up a really nice carpet for a really nice price.
Good luck.
Joe

How did the sharps get broken, Marcus? I remember seeing a picture of it that looked a little messed up.

It's kind of funny--should I call them the black keys, the sharps or the flats ?

Honestly Owen, I have no idea. It was formerly in a church and when I looked at it they were already like that. To further the mystery, it looks like a repair attempt was made on several keys with CA glue (unfortunately). Sally Phillips has them now and is working on the action for me. I ordered two new ones to replace two that were a bit on the "ugly" side. What is even more strange is that all of the white keys are in nice shape and there aren't too many other cosmetic issues that I see other than some scratches on the lid which have been mostly buffed out. I'm looking forward to the day when Sally comes to finish up the piano and give me here professional opinion on the piano.

Looks good, but I’d worry about having that vent right next to it.

It's a return vent. My research says that is fine.

Wow! It's a gorgeous grand Kawai! I think the existing carpet looks very elegant and compliments the piano, the puppy, and the overall decor of your room. Red could be better, but you would want the piano to be the focus point and not the carpet!
