I took piano lessons from age 5 to 10. I was a terrible student who never practiced but in the end I scraped a UK RCM grade 3 and quit. That was in 1961. I didn't touch the piano since until last September.

One of the last pieces of music I played - and was the only piece I can remember actually learning - and that was only because I spent the week at my Grandparents House on my own and was bored, so learnt this music was a piece that I strongly suspect was in the Grade 3 syllabus at the time. I can't find the music book it was in (although I do have other music from before that time) and I can't remember very much of it.

But I just read a post in the Adult Beginners Forum where someone else was trying to find the name of a piece of music and the suggestion was to post here. So that's what I am doing.

Here is a couple of fragments I can remember of the tune SoundClound. The first part is the first few notes of the A section, whilst the second part is the first few notes of the B section. I am afraid that is all I can remember of it.

But I would love to find out what piece of music this was and even better obtain the sheet music for it. Can anyone help

I agree with Carey.

The first section sounded Bachian, but I'm no Bach specialist.

It is definitely not from the marriage of figaro and I would say I am 90% sure its not Mozart or Bach. I had thought, when I first started wondering about this last September that it might have been Scarlatti, but I am unable to find anything of his that closely resembles this.

I am also pretty sure its in E minor.

I was wondering if anyone knew what was in the Grade 3 syllabus back in 1961.

PW is an American forum, and very few here do ABRSM or Trinity exams.

Hornpipe by Henry Purcell, I think. Fascinating how this piece has stayed in your memory for half a century!

You might contact ABRSM management. Since you know this is grade three, 1961, they may be able to email you a copy of the syllabus
