Does anyone have any experience with Delaware pianos? There is one available to purchase for around $5500, but I've never seen or played one before. I know it was made by Kawai, so my initial thought is that it might be decent. Thoughts?

Personally, I never heard of it.

Well...my brain must have been not with it, or autocorrect kicked in. It is actually a Diapason piano. And I don’t see any way to go back and edit the post!

Hi Bryan
You can only edit a post for the first 10 minutes, but there would be nothing wrong with you starting a new thread with the correct Piano brand 😊

I did a quick Google search of "Diapason piano" and it does appear to be associated with Kawai. Whether or not it was actually made in the same manufacturing facilities, by the same employees as the Kawai acoustic pianos is a big question. I would think just being associated with a reputable company like Kawai would be a good thing.

You indicated that you've not seen or played the piano; I would suggest looking at it in person before casting judgement, pro or con. I would say that the price should be well below a similar, real Kawai grand of the same size, age, and condition. I've learned from experience that the name on the fall-board may not indicate how well a piano sounds and plays, but it sure does have a big impact on resale...

Good luck!!

Rick

Thanks for the comments. Once I started typing in the name correctly, the forum search brought up some past threads with good information. 🤪

Anyway, I will definitely play any instrument before purchasing. I’m not afraid of buying something and spending time and money to make it better if it’s worth it in the end. This particular piano is about 3 hours from me, so I am just trying to decide if it even has potential before making the trip.

I may decide to wait though. I just discovered that there may be a 60 year old Grotrian Steinweg available right here under my nose soon. I know that one would be worth it!

Bryan

I wouldn't want to get too far OT here, but since we are having a bit if fun, I once owned an old upright piano with the brand-name "Cadillac" on the fall-board, and embossed in the cast-iron plate/harp. And, guess where it was made? You got it, Detroit Michigan. smile

I tinkered with it a while, done some repair and refinishing, with new key-tops and finally sold it at a loss just to get rid of it.

Here is a bit of history on the "Cadillac" brand...

Cadillac Brand Piano

Fact is, back in the glory-days of the acoustic piano in the USA, there were literally hundreds or maybe thousands of different brand names; some now famous, and some infamous. smile

I think "Delaware" would be just as nice a brand name on the fall-board as any...

That might be, but Delaware in itself is not that grand, being ranked 49th in size among the states; only 11 times bigger than the city I live in.
