Does anyone know of a piano store or practice facility in downtown Boston that might rent me a practice room with an okay-or-better acoustic piano for an hour or two of practice tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, June 12)?

Any suggestions gratefully welcomed!

This is not "for sure" but you might try calling in the morning:

M. Steinert & Sons
1 Columbus Avenue
Boston, MA 02116
617-426-1900
Monday through Friday 10am-6pm
https://msteinert.com/locations/boston/

Maybe 3 years ago, I was able to try out pianos and practice for several hours in their upstairs used grand piano space. (They knew I was really looking for practice space, found the grand at the conference hotel a few blocks away too public although staff let me play on it, and was an out-of-towner at a conference.) The store was pretty empty at that time. I tried out maybe 6 used and/or remodeled Ms - interesting comparisons. I know they have some small rooms used for lessons, and the store has been remodeled since I was there so the layout is probably different. Anyway, you might offer to rent one of the practice rooms. They are near the Boylston St. Green Line subway stop. In any event, it will be interesting to check them out.

Dear ClsscLib,

You might consider, for future trips to Boston or elsewhere, one of the agencies that enables you to search for and book music practice spaces. For instance, Piano.Me lists a very attractive practice room with a grand piano:

https://piano.me/de/listings/77-downtown-rehearsal-studio

For trips to New York, Seattle, Tampa, or Washington, DC:

www.musictraveler.com

has many attractive studios and music rooms at inexpensive hourly rates.

Peter
I just looked on Music Traveler and find only Pilot Cities in the US. Boston is not even a pilot city (yet😊)!
I did not even look at your other link.

Edited to add: I now looked at piano.me and it does not seem to have any US affiliates.
How do these link help with Boston practice spaces?

Harvard Musical Association on Beacon Hill has a large room that they lend out during the day to musicians.

Decent Steinways, I think. You don't have to be a member, and I don't believe there is a charge.

I have not had any success finding a practice room to rent locally, this does not seem to be a common thing to do.

Where I find it really useful to locate at finding a practice room is when I travel for work

I was going to suggest the North Bennet Street School, but see that this trip was about a year and a half ago.
I wonder if it worked out. I thought Steinert had moved out of the city, but looking at their website I see that's not the case. I recall something about them cleaning out (auctioning?) their underground space. ??

I see too that they have a Natick location. My girls and I love the Natick neighborhood. I didn't realize Steinert had a location there.

Another suggestion - Falcetti in Boston might just let you play, or rent you a practice room.

Dear dogperson,

Thank you for your note. Piano.Me does indeed have one very attractive piano studio in Boston, with a Young Chang grand of about 6 or 7 feet. It is just a matter of going to the Piano.Me site and typing in 'Boston' as the place where you want to make music. The page of the "Downtown Rehearsal Studio" will pop up. To make it easier for you, I listed this very site:

https://piano.me/de/listings/77-downtown-rehearsal-studio

As for Music Traveler (www.musictraveler.com), I mentioned this site because it is one of the largest providers of short-term booking arrangements for practice spaces, and lists the city of Boston (grayed out currently) as one of the cities in which it intends to expand. For the time being, there are attractive piano studios for rent in New York, Seattle and Washington, DC. Although these are still in the pilot phase, these affiliates are available and are being rented right now.

I hope you find this useful.
