Vid's recent threads featuring Schumann's Novellette No. 1 inspired me to go back and listen to two recordings I made and posted on PW about seven years ago. My recording of Novellette No. 1 leaves something to be desired, ha but I had better luck with this one of Novellette No. 2. Certainly not under my fingers anymore, but it was great fun to play at the time.

Wow, you sure take the tempo markings seriously! A truly valiant performance, Carey. This is not a pianist-friendly work, like much of Schumann's piano compositions. I actually don't think I've ever heard a performance of the piece that was completely convinced by, even the famous Richter one (though that is electrifying). Arrau does a pretty good yeoman's job with it. But it needs something more than either of them seems able to provide.

Anyway, congrats on this excellent recording. I really enjoyed it.

Thanks SiFi !!

Actually my favorite recording of this work is by the late pianist, Dino Ciani, who was tragically killed in a car accident at age 32. He recorded all of the Novelletten in 1968 at age 26.

Much more convincing than either of the performances by Richter or Arrau. And he somehow successfully manages to exceed the indicated tempo markings !! smile

Vid - If you decide to "go for" No. 2, be sure to get a copy of the Harold Bauer edition (Schirmer) which adeptly distributes the notes differently between the left and right hands in the A section, making the iece INFINITELY easier to play. thumb.
