Back in 2011 we took a group of our forums members (and in many cases, their significant other) on a tour of Germany and Austria.

Now we are planning a new tour, for the summer of 2019!

[Linked Image]

Our focus was on piano and music related sites.
We visited piano manufacturer's shops, composer's homes, Cathedrals and museums, plus so much more.

You can read about it all here:
European Piano Tour 2011

Here are a number of pictures of the 2011 tour on my Facebook page https://tinyurl.com/yaov4ce4

Since then we've been asked a number of times if we would consider organizing another tour.
The answer is, yes, of course.

European Piano Tour 2019? !!

[Linked Image]

But first we have to see how much real interest there is in joining us on the tour.
It will not be a duplicate of the previous tour, although there are a number of places on that tour I wouldn't mind seeing again.

For the 2011 tour we included a beautiful tour bus, a wonderful guide for the entire time, hotel, breakfast and dinner every day, plus admission where required. Once we get more details worked out we will indicate where we will all meet. Getting there and back is your responsibility.

We're just in the initial discussion phase right now. I'm thinking possibly of Austria and Italy this time, but we have to see
how this all develops.

Please take a few minutes to view the previous tour to get some idea of what is involved (and what was included).

Then let me know if you think you would be seriously interested in joining us.
It would be best to EMAIL me with Piano Tour in the subject line frank@pianoworld.com
We would be shooting for Summer 2019.

I will start posting a list of names once we get some responses (a few have already come in).

All the Best,
Frank & Kathy

Hi Frank,

I'm very interested, but timing will matter as I've already been planning a different trip for next Summer. If I can fit in two, all the better! Keep us posted.

The previous tour looks fantastic. I am definitely interested in something like this. I've never been to Europe before and have been itching to visit.

However, I do have plans already on the 14-15th June 2019, so if the dates are before or after that I will be extremely interested to sign up.

Should you decide to make Austria your destination, feel free to give me a shout. I live in Vienna and am quite well connected within the piano scene of makers and technicians over here.

I am interested. More itinerary ddetails would certainly help. The 2011 tour looks wonderful—I would love to do that itinerary!

On an Austria/Italy tour, presumably Bösendorfer and Fazioli would be on the itinerary. There aren't any other piano manufacturers in those countries, are there? Well, maybe Brodmann counts as a partial manufacturer (mostly made in China).

I don't know if we (Mr. Casinitaly and myself) would participate in the whole tour, but we would very likely join in for part of it. It would be great to hook up with you again!

I am potentially interested in participating with 1-2 others (dependent on timing). This trip caught my eye in 2011 - nice to have another chance at it.

Dear Frank and Kathy,

It's me again. We asked, and you really listened ! Thank you so much for organizing a similar tour again !

Here I wish to write down some of my piano dreams. I know it's impossible to include them all in the 2019 tour or perhaps even one is unlikely possible, but it doesn't matter. I'm sure many other interesting places would be included in the tour. I just wish to share some ideas with all piano lovers here:

- Poland --> things about Chopin

- Russia --> many pianists come from Russia and I've heard that some pianos were made in USSR (don't know if they still produce pianos now), see if there are piano things to see in Russia.

- Renner factory visit (hammers and/ or action)

- A factory that manufactures piano parts (e.g. strings, hammers and the like)

- To see something about wood

- To see something about Schubert

- To see something about Liszt

- To see something about Bach

- To see something about Beethoven

- Schimmel factory

- Bechstein factory

- Bluthner factory

- Grotrian factory

- France --> things about Chopin and/ or Debussy. Don't know if there are still some Pleyel things in France now.

- As far as I know, this amazing instrument was invented in Italy. If we'll go to Fazioli, see if it's a good idea to include something about the provenance of piano.

What a great idea! I live in the USA and won't be able to attend, Can't commit that much time. Do it in about 18 years again when I retire and I will be part of it

J and J of j&j would be interested depending on price and schedule.
Would love to tour piano makers in Austria, Italy, and Poland
Would love to tour homes and pianos of Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann. Museums with very early pianos
would be interesting.
Hopefully there’s non- piano stuff for the SO’s.

I think I might be of help in putting together a seriously marvelous trip for the pianophile to Europe.

Why do I think that? I am a total pianophile myself and have just returned from a one week trip to the US which turned to be about pianos and music. I visited a masterclass and attended a concert with the eminent pianist and composer Frederic Rzewski. I met artists and artist managers in New York. I spent 2 days with a really outstanding piano rebuilder in Connecticut, learning quite something about the differences in approach to rebuilding between the US and Europe and soundboard manufacturing. I've visited a restoration shop that was totally unique in its approach to rebuilding old Steinways (Think Centennials) to perfection, trying to stay as close to the original as possible.

In that sense, I might be someone to put together a tour through Europe for the dedicated pianophile that will actually have some value that you won't get on any standard tourist trip. I am pretty well connected within Europe when it comes to pianos, so let me lay out for you what I have in mind:

What countries to visit?

Germany and Austria. Period.

I can hear you screaming Italy, Fazioli, France, Pleyel, Erard - and then your screams would stop because every other European country looks to Germany and Austria in all things regarding piano manufacturing, piano builder vocational trainings, concert technician expertise. Granted, Fazioli IS interesting and it might be something that I could offer as a separate add-on to the tour, but let's focus on what we can do and where to do it, adding traveling time and distances into the calculation.

Vienna has an international airport with direct flights to NYC, Washington, Chicago, Toronto and Los Angeles. So I suggest you get comfortable with the idea of having Vienna as the beginning and end of the trip and doing all the bus/train traveling based from there. Vienna is affordable in terms of accommodation and food, so that adds value as well.

Based in Vienna, those are some of the things I would be able to organize:

* Factory tour Bösendorfer
* Visiting either: Vienna State Opera, The Vienna Musikverein or the Konzerthaus for an opera performance or a concert
* Traveling to the Liszt museum in his birthplace Raiding, visiting the concert hall and an exhibition of exceptional concert grands
* Visiting the Viennese manufacturing site of Feurich. Their Mod. 123 upright is designed and manufactured in Austria
* Visiting a piano maker who specializes in historical instruments such as the Brahms Streicher grand, all playable
* Many walk-in visits to Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, Brahms memorial sites, all within walking or short pub transport

From there on, traveling Germany would be the next thing - and this is where it gets dicey: Many things to see, to visit, but there is no central place in Germany when it comes to things regarding piano. Just take a look at the very incomplete list of manufacturing sites in Germany:

* Steinway & Sons, Hamburg
* Bechstein, Seifhennersdorf, close both to the Czech and Polish border
* Steingräber und Söhne, Bayreuth
* Schimmel, Braunschweig
* Blüthner, Leipzig

And of course Renner as the makers of world famous actions and Abel as the manufacturer of hammers of the highest quality.

Clearly, one has to cherry pick the locations to visit and I know that everyone has different preferences. This is where I would rather think of reducing the numbers of locations to visit. I don't think it adds value to cover as many manufacturers as possible. My suggestion would therefore be:

* Visit either the Steingräber or the Blüthner manufacturing sites.

Both are experienced in hosting groups of visitors and more importantly, both are manufacturing the widest range of products at one site: from the smallest upright to concert grands. My strong suggestion would be Blüthner, for the simple reason that they are also manufacturing their own actions on site.

What else to visit in Germany piano-wise?

* The Klavierfestival Ruhr, by far the largest piano festival in the world between July and September

But then, anything else Germany might have to offer can probably be experienced in Vienna as well, so actually I can't see any real reason to extensively cover large distances and spend time and money on something that doesn't really offer an exceptional value, so I would probably stick to Vienna most of the time. While we are at it: Bösendorfer manufactures its own actions as well and has the same range of products as Blüthner has, so really, I can't see a strong value proposition for 16 hours of traveling back and forth to Leipzig.

OK, so this is just an outline of what I might be able to do, but since I have quite some resilience and flexibility, I am really open to suggestions, questions, hints and errors in perception of expectations. Before going into details of travel planning, budget, dates etc. I'd like your input on the things I wrote down, see what the reactions are and whether you might actually be willing to contribute and commit to putting together a really marvelous experience of getting a feel for the piano world in Austria.

Fire away, please.

That all sounds delightful! I would definitely interested in a trip along those lines. The only piano production site I've visited is Steingraeber. Grotrian is also of interest to me. I haven't been to Vienna for several decades, and would love a good excuse like this to visit again.

Both Feurich and Wendel-Lung as companies, respectively their names, have been bought by an ambitious young couple from China and Austria. They are overseeing their manufactured pianos and grand pianos at their production site in Hailun, China, so different from most pianos from there they actually have their own design in regard to casting, action and some technical novelties. The final quality control and voicing is done by piano technicians from Vienna. Their Mod. 123 upright piano has been designed in Vienna and is also manufactured here. In addition to that they run Vienna's largest piano store with a huge showroom, a sophisticated repair and restoration workshop, a concert hall and a recording studio.

I like their youthful approach, but would also like to emphasize that I have no business affiliation with them whatsoever, just as with any of the other companies mentioned.
