The HS-115 is one of the most affordable new pianos in my local market, available from one of the two dealers in the area for just under $3,000. The HS-118 is about $200 more. And I neglected to ask the price of a 121 (there was not one in the store).

Granted that bigger is generally better in uprights, as far as string length and quality of bass tone goes, how significant do you think the difference is between these three models?

I am shopping for a cousin who is pretty price sensitive, and wondering if I should encourage him to get something other than the shortest model. The piano is for his 16 year-old daughter, who has been practicing on a digital piano.

I can't speak to the particular brand/models mentioned, but I've owned a few very nice 46" studio upright pianos. Yea, the taller the better, as a general rule, but a slightly better low bass may or may not be worth the price difference. It would be an individual/subjective judgment for the buyer.

Good luck!

Rick

Find a 121 to look at. Chinese copy of a Yamaha U-121, Japanese hammers, cast plate, usual suspects in that price range as far as action, etc.

If prepped, not a bad piano.

In the same price range If they haven't gone up too much), I like this piano:

And another thing...I bought a nice K-30 a year or two ago in the mid-twos. Never forget to check around for used.
