I wouldn't consider him the greatest of his time but a lot of his stuff is fantastic. He just takes a lot of listening to get used to.

Thanks for providing all the Medtner plays Medtner links, Roshan! At least in a few of his Skazki, I've always thought his own recordings were the best out there, if one bases that appraisal on capturing the character and style of his music. Looking forward to listening to a few of them. And yes, Rachmaninov always held Medtner in great esteem -- after hearing Medtner's Op 51 Skazki, he was quoted as simply saying: "What tales Kolya tells!" Nice to see the photo of both of them -- Rachmaninov seems to be the one tickled pink just to be in the same photo!
