Looks 20th+ Century, Rare Gems (or as I like to call it, Unsung Heroes), and Female Composers are leading the vote.

I would be willing to be the admin for the 20th+ Century music. The question is, when? How much lead time do we need? The Nordic is in 6 months. 9 months? The quarterly recitals (which we can't interfere with) are in February, May, August, and November. How about January 2020?

I can then take the female composers or rare gems or both (we can hopefully do the Scarlatti too some day).

We have had themed recitals in the summer too. I think 3 per year is manageable. Is the end of June too soon for one?

I added 1 vote to rare gems and 1 to French composers.

Hi, outo! A few comments regarding the recent poll results (and thanks to PikaPianist for suggesting it):

1 It does indeed seem that Female Composers, Rare Gems, and 20th Century Music stand out enough in the "primary election" that you can legitimately limit future Themes to three over 2019/20.

2 I agree that you could schedule any one of them as early as this June, although I think what I would do is apply dates to all three for 2019/20. And, of course, if this June, open the schedule list right now for whatever theme is chosen!

3 I'd be a tad careful about the Rare Gems idea -- what I'd personally do on that concept is invite all participants to provide what they especially value as a "gem" (or perhaps several of them), as opposed to an implicit demand for the obscure. In other words, the "gem" could be by a very well-known Classical or non-Classical composer -- just one very seldom heard. I believe that would have the effect of making the Recital both more inclusive and personal in nature.

How about this:
This weekend I will make the initial threads for both the Nordic recital and a "rare gems" recital, the latter scheduled for this summer. It can include any piece that one would not usually see in these recitals, even something from a method book, so it does not have to ber a large complicated one. There should be enpugh time for everyone to prepare something, if they want to participate.

I personally have learned/tried to learn a few pieces that I am sure no-one here has heard and not many if any recordings exist. I really like them and I hope to be able to record at least one of them smile

Personally I would think 20th century refers to the "classical" composers of the last century, such as:
Prokofiev, Bartok, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Hindemith, Messiaen, Casella, Boulez, Stockhausen, Cage...

Do you think the voting on the future recitals is already done? cmb13's new post on the main ABF forum might have gotten a bit more attention to this thread.

Also there is a "+" on the end of 20th, so it includes the most prolific composers of complex music today such as Thomas Adès and John Adams. And of course it could include contemporary composers who weren't alive in the last century, such as Alma Deutscher! wink

There's no reason we cannot have them all, it's just a matter of when smile

It becomes a bit more difficult to find the sheet music when we get closer to today, but certainly those qualify.

Also there are hundreds (thousands?) of graded piano pieces that qualify as modern, since most of the composers are living and working. This also fits in with our home - the Adult Beginners Forum. People like Christopher Norton and Martha Maier.

Sounds good to me, Outo! Speaking for myself, I can supply several pieces right now for both recitals -- although in the case of the Rare Gems, I'll have to mull over which ones.
