There will be a Nordic Recital in October. As far as I remember there are no others settled?

Just to summarize, the following have been suggested in this thread:
  • Music of the African diaspora (PianogrlNW)
  • Music of Asia (PianogrlNW)
  • GAS - Great American Songbook, including holiday music (casinitaly, Sam S, outo)
  • Asian/African/Middle East (outo)
  • Einaudi (Sam S)
  • 20th+ century classical music (squidbot, outo)
  • Beginner music. RCM Prep B themed recital. (Ralphiano, Tyrone Slothrop, bSharp(C)yclist)
  • Future-themed piano recital (Whizbang)
  • A recital of unusual, underplayed pieces. "Rare Gems Recital." (sinophilia, PikaPianist, Tim Adrianson)
  • A recital for piano 4-hands and piano + another instrument, or even chamber music (sinophilia)
  • A recital with only pieces by female composers (sinophilia, PikaPianist, Tim Adrianson)
  • New Age or Contemporary theme including Einaudi, George Winston, Yiruma, contemporary classical composers, etc. (Pathbreaker)

A Nordic recital. Is that Scandinavia, or am I way too ethnocentric and is that Far North (Russia), Northern Canada and Siberia as well?

Playing the piano is learning to create, playfully and deeply seriously, our own music in the world.

Nordic countries was the idea, so Scandinavia + Finland.

I really like the ideas of beginner or rare music recitals. Was also wandering if music from movies (not songs) would appeal to people as recital theme.

Hi, Outo! So the Nordic recital in Oct 19 is for sure, eh? In that case, I will proceed with purchasing my selected music of Harald Saeverud, Dag Wiren, and Einojuhani Rautavaara -- I already have a couple of Carl Nielsen scores in my possession. The idea is to have one representative apiece from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland -- and not Grieg or Sibelius, the two obvious choices that I expect will be well represented (well, Grieg, anyway).

Yes, it is settled.
But did you forget Iceland? That is of course included smile

Here are some Finnish piano composers...plenty of others, especially modern, of course but these should have scores available easily:
Sibelius, Melartin, Merikanto, Madetoja, Hannikainen, Palmgren, Kaski, Kuula
From Denmark Niels Gade comes to mind.
I admit my ignorance about Sweden...besides Stenhammar.
Norway has Grieg of course but the must be others....

My piano group had a themed recital last year where we just played music from French composers (Debussy, Ravel, Messiaen, etc). How about that for another idea?

Have we not had one before? If not then why not. I could do some Poulenc...

Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland?

Better wear a sweater and scarf for this recital!

I hope I have some left after 17 years in Florida.

Interesting. I wonder if íslendingar consider themselves Scandinavian? They are Nordic though.

Just checking on the Oracle Wikipedia wink ), I see that "Nordic" includes Greenland, the Faroe Islands, the Ã…land Islands, Svalbard, and Jan Mayen. Wonder if any of those have any piano music? smile

So there was a reason I got that Lopapeysa?

Maybe I need to look into Icelandic piano music?

Sure! Why not? Regular quarterly recitals have non-classical piano and this recital hasn't been stricted to certain composers smile

Hi, I enjoyed the experience of Bach themed recital so much, and I am thrilled to know, there is Nordic recital upcoming. Has a sign up thread been already started?

I like the ideas of collaborative piano music, female composers, rare gems, and 20+ century music recitals.

I wonder if piano transcriptions recital would be interesting - to think about piano being an orchestra, a voice, or some other instrument, and work on multiple layers/voicing, and timbre. Another idea are French harpsichordists, or Mozart, and Haydn - for clear articulation. There was waltz recital, and theme with variations recital recently. Perhaps some other music forms would be considered as a binding thread - like mazurkas, polonaises, ballades, nocturnes, sonatas, fugues, and so on.

Sorry if I repeat the propoals of the other members of the PW.

As a follow-up to the Bach themed recital, one I've always thought could be really quite interesting is Scarlatti. His keyboard Sonatas cover a wide range of emotions, and there are enough of intermediate difficulty to make it a legitimate consideration.

This would be my favorite recital ever, and I think I proposed it some years ago smile

I will make a sign up thread for the Nordic recital soon. Although we do not really need one if there are no rules about doubles, I think it is a good way to keep the interest up and a reminder.

There are plenty of suggestions already...So I wonder how should we actually decide? How many members need to support the idea? Or is it enough that someone volunteers to administer it?
