A technician from here in Wisconsin had gone to Albuquerque, NM to visit and got a job while there. He did exactly as Roy explained with the leaf blower and fan, etc. I had to take a second look to be sure that it was not him telling the story.

Just this past week, I had a new customer with a Boston Grand who was delighted with the cleaning that I did, much like the original poster, only a few years old, not really "dirty" looking but not clean either. She was an accomplished pianist. Her remark was as I have often heard, "I have never known of a piano technician who actually cleaned the piano". I answered, "I always clean the piano".

Some months ago, a woman with a Steinway B called for urgent service, wanting the piano "tuned and voiced" before her club would meet. (Her usual tech could not accommodate her in time). Apparently, her idea of what "tuned and voiced" was a lot different from mine and in the 10 years she had owned the piano, it had never been cleaned nor had any other maintenance done on it except what she described as "needling the hammers" (her understanding of what "voicing" means).

Back to the original poster who seemed to hold previous technicians in such high regard and thought I had assumed all too much: I don't think I assumed enough.

My approach was to use compressed air (from my 30gal shop compressor and a long hose extended into the house) with a blow gun to gently shoot a stream of air from one of these at about 40psi:

With my other hand, I held the end of the hose from a shop vac to catch as much of the dislodged dirt/dust as possible as it billowed up. It was very successful at getting most of the dust and loose debris off the soundboard, but did make somewhat of a mess. I may try to snake a damp microfiber cloth around under the strings to get a bit more, but that will have to suffice until I remove the strings and plate to refinish the soundboard.

Best,

More expensive, but will last a LOT longer:

All the rage with detail shops specializing in exotic sports cars. A couple of coats on the plate and soundboard would probably outlast the owner. It's THAT good.

I have a friend who does auto detailing and I just heard about this from him a couple of weeks ago. Will be interesting to try it on a SB.

👍
