1926 L. Piano rebuilt with Steinway parts in 2011. Just bought piano 2 months ago and since then it makes too much noise when Damper lifts via pedal or with individual notes. My tech says the damper felt still too soft thus creating noise whenever lifted . I feel it’s too much noise regardless. Damper seems to lift at correct time.

Any ideas if this newness is the case or what can I do to repair? Just for comparison, played 6-8 new pianos, Steinway and other brands, in showroom recently and none made this much noise.

Thanks!

You probably want to re-post this in the main tuner-tech section (not the FAQ), where there is much more traffic.
Can you tell which notes are problematic? One possible solution is to remove some of the excedent part from the "W-shaped" dampers.

As Bourniplus says, trimming the trichord wedge felt in the tenor section can make a difference. Also, in my experience most aftermarket damper regulation is atrociously bad. Try slowly depressing the sustain pedal while watching the damper heads carefully. If the damper lift is uneven or if there is a lot of twisting of individual dampers heads as they clear the strings, this can contribute to excess damper whoosh.

I followed the process shown in this video on my Model B and it made all the difference.

I would question how much your tech knows about dampers. They are the quietest when brand new,(though the damping, which we are not talking about here, may improve as they mate to the strings).

I would suggest that you listen carefully to the noise and find out if it is just when the felt is leaving the strings, or does the noise still occur in the travel of the dampers after the initial lift. If it is just on the initial movement, you felt is too hard or the strings have enough corrosion on them to be strummed by the felt. If the noise is still happening when the felt is out of the strings, it is the wires that are making the noise, usually by too much lateral pressure and not enough polishing. You would also want to make sure that the damper guide rail was rebushed with new felt.

Also, use the sostenuto pedal to hold various sections of the dampers off the strings while you press the damper pedal. It is usually the tri-chord split felts that make the noise, though sometimes the bi-chords will contribute. You may need new felt. The Steinway felt I have bought has always been the quietest, however, the blocks are cut so poorly that I hate to use them.
Regards,
