Lot 1295, pookandpook.com

$3400 plus 22% commission and 6% sales tax. I bid $3200.

Advertised as Model L. But this came out in 1925 and 159980 serial number suggests1912 production.

Pre-auction estimate was $4000 to $7000

As these go for (so much) more at retail, it suggests something might seriously have been wrong with this one??? Or maybe not.

What's the verdict?

Thank you BDB.

I changed the title of this thread to reflect that it is a Model O and not a Model L.

The auction house could provide no information other than it came from a Saucon Valley estate. The auction house is not far from Philadelphia and is fairly well known. It is possible to bid on the internet or place a phone bid so it means that anyone in the world with a wallet and a phone or an internet connection could have bought this. So it's not like it was at some local poorly attended auction. To me, it looked good and sounded good...which doesn't mean a whole lot! I know to look for a cracked soundboard and this wasn't evident...again, doesn't mean a whole lot!

It seems to me that if this were a piano without problems, it would have gone for more--a whole lot more!

Probably against better judgment I was the high bidder at $3200 and thought I had it. Internet bidder bid it up to $3400. I did not bid the next bid of $3600.

The trouble is, I don't have the income to afford what these bring in a retail setting. I honestly don't know how you all afford these in the mid 5 figures! Maybe even if it did have problems, it still could have been a bargain as any problems could have been rectified and a piano was had for far less than retail after factoring in restoration/repairs?????

The only thing I noticed is that the legs were somewhat darker than the case, suggesting a refinish. Maybe not. If refinished, it was a very professional job.

Again, seems to me that something must be amiss given a well advertised auction near a major city.

I thought about hiring a piano tuner to have a look last week prior to the auction, but then others would know one way or the other at my expense. Plus, there was the possibility I could have done all this and never been able to touch it. A Philadelphia highboy from 1755 with a preauction estimate of $8000 to $12000 fetched $46000, for example. This piano could have fared similarly...

It has been refinished, on the outside which one can see from the decal. Mahogany tends to look different depending on the angle of the grain, which affects how the legs look. The inner rim was not refinished, and the rest of the piano looks original.

I suspected refinishing. Was it a good deal or not?

A deal for the high bidder? Or a deal for someone in the industry with skill in the piano field?

If a deal for the high bidder, at what point would it not have been a deal? I mean, it sold for $3400. How much should I have bid before backing off?
