Hello all,

I am new here. I am a composer from Chile, and I have been 19 years as a musician.

I have the possibility now of buying a digital piano and I am between those two possibilities: Kawai kdp90 and Kawai kpd110RW

Which piano sounds better to your ears? and which one has better action?. I just want to focus in those two things and this is more or less my budget. It doesnt matter if one cost a bit more than the other, the main thing is the sound and the action.

I play and compose classical music

Thanks!

The KDP110 is a recent model and uses the RH-II Compact action which is superior to the "old" Advanced Hammer Action IV-F on the KDP90. The KDP110 also has BlueTooth connectivity which may prove useful for you to connect the DP to an external VST since the sound engine on these two models is a couple of generations old already. Since you are a professional player I think you should go for the best possible action you can buy. So, I suggest you to check the price of a second hand CA67 or even of the older CA65/95 - you lose nothing checking out what the market has to offer.

Thanks arc_turus for your comment. It seems all the balance is inclined to the Kdp 110. Just the last question, in terms of sound, is one better than the other or they just sound almost the same?.

Sadly I didnt found the CA models available in my country, not to a "decent" price for my budget at least.

Rgds,
Ricardo

The sound engine is the same (HI engine/samples) but the kdp 110 has new samples of the sk-ex. The kdp 110 is overall a better piano than the kdp 90. I would not be surprised if Kawai discontinues the kdp 90 and replaces it with the new 110. And yes, the ca models are unfortunately at a quite higher price bracket...

Hello donethur, welcome to the forum.

arc_turus' responses to your queries are spot on! wink

Given the choice between these two instruments, I would almost certainly select the KDP110 - it is a better piano in allmost every way.

Here is a KDP90 vs KDP110 comparison slide from the instrument's dealer materials - the red highlighted cells indicate new/improved features.

Kawai James, is there any ideas on when the KDP110 will become widely available in the US. For now, only Kraft Music seem to have them. No Amazon, no Guitar Center, no Sweetwater even though the older model (KDP90) has disappeared from their websites. The majority music stores that show up in Google are either .AU or CO.UK

Hello Oskar,

If the KDP110 is available from Kraft Music, I expect it will become available from other retailers in the not so distant future.

My recommendation would be to contact the respect retailers directly to query this kind of information.

Kind regards,
James

Hello James,

is there a way to compare a Kawai digital piano model in production to an obsolete model?

I only know about http://www.kawai-global.com/product_comparison/?c=36 where it is only possible to compare models in production....

Thanks in advance!

Hello Jasper,

Currently, discontinued models are hidden from the website, however the information is still retained in the database. We are working on adding a 'show discontinued models' feature to the website in the near future, which will facilitate comparing current and previous generation models side-by-side.

Kind regards,
James

Hello,

I've just bought the Kawai KDP110 and I'm very impressed by the sound it produces comparing to my previous Korg Pa300 keyboard, but I have some doubts.
I'm new in playing the piano (I learned playing keyboard for 8 years when I was younger - 10 years ago - and now I try to switch to proper piano playing smile )

When I play left and right hand with the same force, in my opinion the bottom end covers higher tones.
To hear overall sound as I can find on youtube videos, I have to play very soft with my left hand.

There are some reviews on youtube ('Bonners music' or 'Better music' channels) for this model, but it is impossible for me to judge how firmly they play with the left hand.

Do you have any thoughts concerning this issue? Or maybe this is how real piano works? Or the comparison with piano sound from Korg pa300 taat I played for a few months couses such impression?

I’ve not played the 110 but I would say acoustic pianos to be much worse in this respect. It’s a difficulty facing many beginners, intermediates, and I have this problem on my own DP, also switching from my DP to my teachers grand.

Yes, that is typical of how a real piano behaves. If the 110 goes some way to emulating that it is probably a very good thing, unless you have no intention to ever play an acoustic piano and just want the easiest playing digital instrument.

This is definitely not the case smile
I bought this Kawai just because in my apartment there is no place for even small grand piano and I like to train quite late, so my neighbors would not be very pleased with real piano sound at 10 or 11 p.m. smile

Thank you for your explanations.
It seems that this is not bug, but very important professional feature smile

How do you guys find sound of this DP? Are you as impressed with its sound as many reviewers claim or it is rather nothing special?
I do not have much experience with this so far smile

You can worry excessively about whether a sound it good or not, but the best thing to do is to grow to like your own piano. Sounds are very individual things and no two people on here like the same thing.

You can probably make small tweaks to the settings to match your taste, but even there find something you like and stick with it. Use your time to enjoy playing it

I have a Kawai CA67 and I found the sound I like over a period of a couple of months (changing about once a fortnight, until I found the best that I liked overall) , set it up as to always start with that one on power on, and now I try to forget about it. I occasionally change to other instruments to play a piece, but I never select a different piano.

Well said. I have an ES110. It's not the best-sounding Kawai model, but after 6 weeks, I've become very comfortable with what I'm hearing.

As I mentioned in another thread, I start up with the Classical Piano 2 sound, not the default Classical Piano sound. I also add a bit of reverb ("small hall"). My 110 is in the HML-1 cabinet in a carpeted family room and it sounds a bit dry without any reverb, IMO.
