I just bought a Big Knabe concert grand. Has anyone restored one of these? It seems to have all steel wound bass strings. It’s mahogany! It’s a pretty nice original — no one did any cheesy reconditioning. Any experience out there with one of these?

Have fun with the pinblock. If it's like the one I had, fully morticed into the rim like a Bechstein. Otherwise should be great.

I have a 1929 Knabe concert grand. It's a modern covered block design. The old open block (mortised) looks to have been discontinued by Knabe between 1902 and 1908. Maybe try cyanoacrylate on the block, it's inexpensive, and no residual harm if you decide later to go for the full rebuild.

What about the character of the instrument? This one seems to have steel wound strings

While there are people who make iron wound strings, who knows what the character was originally?

Someone who will have rebuilt it in modern times, from the soundboard up.

I have only seen about a dozen Knabe concert grands, but every one I inspected had a really wide, round capo bar, and all the trebles suffered for it.
