Can anyone speak to the RP-102 for a beginner to piano? My local store has it new on sale for 30% off the normal $999. My internet research suggests it's essentially a FP-30 with 3 pedals and stand except the FP-30 offers 1) continuous pedal and 2) a more robust speaker. And they have slightly different specced internal sounds. Am I missing any important differences?

So the RP-102 would be $699 and the FP-30 would be the same price, but a stand and single pedal for the FP-30 would add on another $140. (Stand plus triple-peal would be an extra $230, so I'm not interested in that.)

Alternatively, the Kawai ES110 with furniture stand and single pedal would be the same $839. (But the KDP110 with 3 pedals is probably too expensive at $1199)

Is the RP-102 enough piano for a rank beginner, or should I look at spending more?

Ottokeys, welcome to the world of the piano!

At $699, the Roland RP-102 is a good value. It is certainly "enough piano for a rank beginner", with its quality PHA-4 key action and internal songs/connectivity options to help with learning. The RP-102's sustain pedal does offer continuous detection, by the way.

Its main drawback, in my opinion, is the lower-power 6W amplifiers with speakers concealed in a cabinet. But it is a fine value at the discounted price, so I think you would do well to go for it. Best wishes for your piano purchase decision!

Do you need portability? If you don't get the factory stand and opt for a quality aftermarket one, the FP-30 would then be a better choice than the RP-102 if the ability to relocate it easily matters at all.

IMHO the RP-102 is ugly :(, the FP-30 is more attractive, not much, and easier to relocate, and and they're the same piano with different cabinet

Hoang, I agree with you: FP-30 is more attractive. I've got one in my room.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm still trying to decide. I agree that the RP-102 isn't the prettiest piano, and I think I prefer the look of the FP-30 (or ES110) in optional furniture stand. Probably not going to go for the RP model then, but I'm not in a rush to buy anything - maybe in the summer. So thanks again.
